Fat Jack: Me thinks ye are being to hard on thy self. If ye were a real idiot ye would not even comprehend how to walk across the street let alone anything pertaining to BP. What ye need to do is never be distracted by anyone or anything when ye are starting to load ye rifle. Before ye stop what ye are doing finish what ye have started then answer the person who so rudely interupted ye train of thought. This is what caused ye problem in the first place. I make it a habit to never ask a question or start a conversation when someone is prepareing to shoot. I wait until they have fired their shot ,if at all I have to talk to them. All of us at one time or another have dry balled -learn from it. If someone has never dryballed then at some point they will. Think about what ye are doing and be safe to others and ye self. mudd turtle

I shouldn't say this, but I haven't done that yet. BUT  the other day shooting my 45. I dumped the powder and ramed a between the powder and ball patch down. I grabed a ball. Without thinking I dropped the ball in the barrel and reached for a patch  I thought I'll just turn the barrel down and if should come out :nono: it didn't. So I ramed it home and shot about 7 inches high and to the right. We have all have done something goofy.
  :hatsoff:

I have shot ML's for 35 years and just a few years back, dryballed, shot out my rammer and had a yellowjacket fly up my breechclot and plant his stihger dangerous close to some of my favorite anatomy, it looks to me like you had a pretty good day considering all the possibilities.

:rotf: :rotf: ya mean it's a sin to dry ball :shocked2: heck i've dry balled so many times i can pull a ball in my sleep :shake: :rotf: what's so bad bout dry balling? it give ya practis pulling yer ball :blah: heck i even use the pulled ball wit the screw hole as a hollow point then :rotf: my goodness i love this place  :v ................bob

Congratulations. Now you qualify for the next merit badge: shooting your rod. There are fewer of us that have reached that lofty level, so it's something to strive for.

Unfortunately, you've missed the opportunity to earn both a dryball badge and a shot rod badge in one day, like john12865 - now that's a trick! He didn't kill the squirrel like he claimed, however. It died from laughing.

I'd tell you about all the merit badges I've earned over the last 40 years but modesty prevents me from bragging. I'll just add my welcome to the club.

Fat Jack, you can earn two merit badges in one day if you really try !!!

I haven't put shot my db shotgun without powder but I've scared the heck out of a flock of doves cause I forgot to load shot :cursing: And for dry ballin' I carry my priming flask even when I'm shootin' my cappers  sure saves time cause I got to blip a ball out at least every other time I go to the range, Shootin' the :bull:
instead of shootin' the targets

Lets just say that I have used more than 1 cartridge in my co2 discharger. Makes me feel kinda stupid when I have to use it but at least I'm smart enough to know I going to do something stupid and plan for it.

I did the same thing a couple of years ago. As usual, I was busy talking :yakyak: , I believe about someone else who had dryballed, when I did it myself. After I pulled the ball, I was talking about how stupid I was to do that, and of course I immediately dryballed a second time!

In the 34 years I've been shooting these things, I haven't dryballed too many times and this was the first back to back dryball. I have to say that I'm surprised that I haven't done it more often. At our club, at least one or two shooters do it every month, which goes to show that we like to talk and we really like to rib the guys who do it.

Two types of folks in this ol' world, them as has, and them who are gonna. Welcome to the club. :cursing:

Hell, when I bought my rifle (having read this forum for a bit) I did it on purpose just to be sure I know how to handle myself at the range when I do it for real. That clock is ticking...

:shake: For years I bragged that I had not dry balled except once when I was a beginner....then the other day--Darn!--I did it again. Got in a hurry, just wanted to get one more shot off before I had to quit and clean-up to take the wife to a "function"....it happens...

Not me, no sirree, never, no way, couldn't happen!
"BUT" have poured a little powder through the nipple channel a few times, on purpose of course.
I can't imagine anybody, to be soooo stupid as to dry ball your muzzleloader.
There ain't "nuthin worse" than "DRY BALLS"

Best Regards
Old Ford

Well guys thank for maken me feel a little better would like to blame ol Gray Whiskers, but Alas, I just had my head in my ass!!! Thanks again. F.J.

Happened to me too a couple of weeks ago with my .69 Springfield. Couldnt even pull it out with the ball puller, had to do it with powder under nipple.

Yes, I am also a dryballer and I am not proud of it. :cursing:

Remember: Never load while talking to someone at the range! Even worse things can happen if you talk to someone while loading, just think about putting a double charge in it!
