The Trade Gun made meat this morning! Didn’t see a bird at all yesterday, after the rain and storms Friday night. Didn’t see anything early this morning, so made a move to where I had seen a Gobbler on opening day. I had been there for about an hour and a half, when I heard a very faint gobble, way to the south. I hit the aluminum @vector_custom_calls real loud, and waited. Then, I see a Tom north of me about 300 yds. So I gave him some yelps. He was slowly working his way down the pasture, when something caught my eye... There were 2 big Toms right by my Jake decoy!! Luckily I had my flintlock up and ready, as nervous as they both were! The load of 2F black and #5 lead shot did the job at 18 steps!
10 7/8” beard
1 1/8, 1 1/16 spurs
17 pounds, 7oz
I used the Skychief Special load, 70 gr by volume of 2F under 85gr by volume of #5 lead shot.
I had set up my camp last weekend, hunted our opening day, last Monday. Then came back down Friday after work to hunt and camp the weekend!!!

Are you on private land so you can leave the camp, and, be safe using that gobbler decoy? I'm nervous on our state land just using a poor quality jake decoy.

I was on public land with a hen decoy and was in a grass/stick blind I constructed. I saw a guy crawling towards me. When he raised his gun, I shouted, "Hens are not legal!" He jumped up and ran the other way, thank God.

PS: I like the 'night-cap/tent' photo complete with candle. :thumb:

Great hunt story, and an inviting camp. A weekend well-enjoyed!
Congrats on the meat for your table.

Especially like the view of your trade gun & turkey against the spoked wheel. :thumb: ~wiksmo
