I was visiting with another member of this forum in person about things you do thru out the year that make you think about hunting in the fall.

For me it's when I make grilled sandwiches on the griddle because usually in camp that's what we have for lunch after the morning hunt. Or having sardines and crackers for a snack after work makes me think of elk camp.

For him it's when he does his crafts because he will bring his crafts into elk camp and work on them in his lodge when not hunting. He also said sometimes he'll set his lodge up between rendezvous's or in the winter and work on his crafts in there just to get away from the day to day stuff.

What things do you have in your day to day activities that mentally take you to that time of year to make meat?

I have a dear friend who has been a hunting companion for forty years. It became a ritual to meet at a certain place in his woods for luncheon sandwich. He would always draw out from his pack a brownie and a "tannie" , one for each of us, made fresh by his wife. Can't eat a brownie (or tannie) withgout being transported to the snowy deer woods. Good smoke, ron in Fla (long way from snow)

Hello Guys
My best way to think of hunting is when my son asks me to show him my long rifle... The feel of the wood, the flats, and the light smell of oil and powder do it every time. Thats wehn I usally go get the skillet out and do up some bacon, and pan fried bread... Darn that boy is going to make me fat...
My best regards just a loyalist Dawg :hatsoff:

Just ask my wife, I NEVER STOP thinking about hunting.

Nothin' like watching the sunrise on a crisp morning.

ya mean there are times when yer NOT suppose ta think bout huntin????????????????? :bull: ALWAYS,ALWAYS, ALWAYS, thinkin bout how, when, where, every shoot is practice, every 'vous is huntin camp, every fire is a place to tell huntin stories, every funeral,( even dad was dress to go huntin!)wedding,(tellin the new bride where hubbys gonna be come fall)bithdays(old enough to get a license? or OLD enough to get a free one!),parties,(stories of seasons past, some BS..) even the daytona 500,yer lookin fer the real tree car,or ward burtons wildlife project car,,not think bout huntin? ohhhhhhhhhh the horror :shocked2: RC now talk scents! :haha:

Same here...think about it all the time...every weekend when I go to the range I'm "shooting deer"...every time I see some sort of animal that I often see in the woods (deer, turkey, hawk, crow, etc, etc) makes me think of it...the constant arrival of monthly hunting / shooting / muzzleloading magazines makes me think ot it.

Squirrel/Rabbit/shed hunting January/February, varmint hunting March/April, Turkey hunting April/May, review/update/repair gear and scout possible new stand locations June/July, get stands in place and dove hunt August/September, deer hunt October through New Year's day.

Repeat.

I think about hunting all of the time, but I think I get your drift because there is something special about Fall in general. The fact that most hunting seasons take place (start) in the Fall makes it a bit more special - at least to me it does. I guess that the first blush of the trees starting to consider changing into Fall wardrobe realy gets me going. I am talking about that time of late summer when the mass of green trees you have been looking at for months suddenly turns into shades of green that show the different varieties of the trees themselves. This is way before the reds, yellows and orangs - but still - the trees change somehow in the green shading. Anyhow, not to get too far gone here, but that is when I start thinking of small game, turkey and deer and push the woodchucks off to a back burner.

I think about hunting all year.Morning ,Noon and Night. Some things though will trigger that Feeling of Urgency like a Wet Dewey morning In September,The smell of a Campfire at Rendevouz in August. The crack of Dawn on a Cold Morning out on the North Atlantic. These things and more trigger it for me.I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the point. :v

Besides thinking about deer hunting all year around - the real urge comes in the fall and the particular way fall usually smells. This past year me and another guy from work were walking out the back door of the office at night during a light rain. The scent of wet decaying leaves in the air was stunning and really kicked off the yearly obsession for hunting.

For me it is the smell of a skunk!

Don't laugh now yall it really is. Not sure why, perhaps the wildness of it or maybe we would always smell one either enroute to the woods or while there somewhere. But anytime I smell a skunk smell I am transported back to hunting in my mind. Of course that is not the only time it happens, like most it is everyday too.

I don't want to hijack this thread...but I cannot pass up this opportunity to give huge credit to my Wife of 40 years...I'm huntin' or shootin' somthing every weekend year round and she's just been terrific about it for nearly a half a century.
Of course, all the other days I'm dilligently doing my 'honey-dos' so I guess it's been a good trade-off...

an...if i member right RB ya did attend a family weddin on openin day...right? that ought count fer something! RC

By gosh you're right...I haven't even BEGUN to milk that one for brownie points yet

Shooting and hunting is pretty much on my mind year 'round. When the wife asks me do put together my birthday or Christmas list, it contains mostly things I need or think I need for hunting and such. I spend a fair amount of time wandering around in the woods. No matter the time of year. It relaxes me.
