Well, since I've gotten my Cumberland Fowler I've been kickin' around the idea of sellin' off my 3 rifles and pickin' up a 20ga Trade Gun or some other kind of flint smoothbore and just having all smoothbore muzzle loaders. Most of my hunting(when I get to go) is small game like rabbits, squirrels and dove and "large" game would be Turkey and Deer. Shots at deer where I hunt generally are around the 50 yrd. range so a good smoothbore with a proper round ball and patch should work fine. What do ya'll think? Is anyone else all smoothbore out there, if so how does it work out for ya'?

I think that as soon as you sold off your rifles, you'd find that you wanted them back.

If you want a trade gun, save for it. Don't sell for it.

That being said, I too have found myself shooting mainly my smoothbore flintlocks and my rifles (both percussion and flint) have been collecting dust. But at least they are there when I do want or need them.

I think smoothies are the best all-round gun you could have. I shoot my CF shotguns much more often than I take out my CF rifles, and I'm getting to be that way with the ML versions too. But, that said, I agree with Russianblood -- I would probably regret it the day after I sold off one of my rifles. Save up for that second smoothie.

Maybe I'll see if I can swap my A&H Mt.Rifle and Frontier rifle for a Trade gun and keep the 40cal Poorboy rifle since it's my favorite rifle because I've done so much work to it.

Since I recently began shooting & hunting with .54/.28ga & .62/.20ga Flint SB barrels from GM, I've become very impressed with their versatility and their RB accuracy...like you, 99% of the deer I shoot are 25-50yds...took a couple last fall with the .54 SB, both around 35yds.

On the other hand, I like to shoot a lot on the weekends, particularly with a .45cal and would probably miss the rifles if they were gone...it does make a case for trimming down the inventory though... :hmm:

Frank,
I have a couple of friend that think the same ways are you. All they shoot are smoothbore rifle and fowlers. It made them are better shot, a better hunters, and basically simplified everything in their pack.

Here's a gun I'd like. I e-mailed em' to see if they'd be interested in a trade for the A&H and the Frontier. The only center fire long guns that I hae are an old Savage/Stevens single shot 12ga that I got when dad passed away and a Mossberg 500a Turkey gun, I really don't feel the need for a center fire rifle. I think I could live nicely with the 11ga Cumberland Fowler and this 20ga Trade gun AND I'll still have the 40cal Poorboy rifle to play around with. :hmm:

Awe, I've bought and sold so many guns over the years that it's a pretty much painless thing to do anymore. If I can sell of swap a couple rifles that I have just sitting around for a gun that I can get more use out of I'll gladly do it. If anyone is interested shoot me an e-mail.

You get an oil stain on your Wife's nice quilt and selling your rifles with be the least of your concerns...
:rotf:

LOL, that's my quilt and it already has a couple oil stains on it from other guns. :blah:

Giving more thought to the subject, I agree with your decision to go smoothbore. I made that choice a long time ago and have several in cal. from .40 to .80 and I love them all. The .40 is the most accurate with both shot and ball. Rarely do I use one of my rifles and when I do, it's because there are going to be some long range shots and my pard's have thrown down the gauntlet! :shocked2:

Enjoy! Pathfinder

I got a reply from TOW on the Caywood trade gun for my two rifles. They said they's study it a bit and get back to me. Don't understand what they'd need to "study". my two rifles retail for well over $1100 new and even used they should still get around $850($450 A&H, $400 Frontier) so that's still more then the asking price of the Trade gun($789.00). Guess I just need to call em' up and talk to em'.

They won't give you near what they are worth in trade. Just like a used car dealer, they are out to make money too and have to get yours as cheap as possible to make a profit. You would be better off selling them outright or finding an individual to trade with. JMO

Agree...probably wouldn't offer more than $500 for the pair...especially if they are not high volume 'mover' models...doubt they'd want to go to all the trouble and risk just to make a few dollars.

An alternative is to take some good photos, list them on GunBroker (free listing) get worldwide visibility and they'll sell quickly if they're a desired item and you have them priced right.

Timing is perfect now too because hunters are starting to think ahead...we're coming up on July...and seasons will be opening in September/October, etc.

Week before last I put a .12ga Navy Arms SxS double on GunBroker one day, had a bid the next, and the following day another guy bought it outright for my "buy it now" top price.

I have both of em' listed on a Round Robin sight. Maybe I can sell em' or swap em' both to someone for a nice smoothbore. I'm sure someone has a couple extra smoothbore flintlocks sitting around and they'd like a couple nice rifles in their collection. Just have to wait and see. :v

Round Robin site? Tell me more!

p.s. The surgery on my shoulder and hand didn't go as well as I had hoped :cursing: , no biggie, just can't build things like I could before, have stuff to trade. :(

Shoot me a PM and I'll give the address to the site. Also, let me know what kind of "stuff" you might have to trade.

And I was just thinkin' about gettin' a rifled barrel for my Renegade. :shake:

I did the same "thinking" as you for a couple of years. Didn't sell any of the rifles though.
Admittedly, since the switch, I've only shot one rifle, 1 time just for giggles at the range over a year ago.
I enjoy the smoothie so much more.
50 yds. is a long shot in the swamps I hunt deer.
Pheasant, geese and ducks are quite the challenge for a single shot.
I also like going back and forth between the clays and paper at the range.
Took awhile to get my accessories down to what's really needed for shooting both (ball/shot)out of a bag though. It was/is all fun and interesting.
Does help you appreciate the challenges of times past too.
