But not feeling like spending more than 500! Cabelas is looking really good to me right now what are yalls views on their rifles specifically 50. Hawkens? Maybe even the sporterized rifles?????? Maybe even the Carbine ???? Please put in your 2 cents either way hi:

I own a old CVA HAWKEN and its awesome but I am ready to have my own never used before rifle! Maybe give the CVA to my father who I would like to get on the trad rifle wagon with me! :v

Thanks guys  but whats wrong with cabelas??????

wow over 50 views and only 3 of you felt inclined to give your .02  please speak up

I'll also vote for the Lyman GPR. I have two .54 GPRs, one flint and one percussion. They are very accurate out to 100 yards with round ball and well within your price range. The GPR has a 32" long, 1 in 60" twist barrel. If you want a 28" long, 1 in 48" twist barrel simular to the Cabela's Hawkens, look at the Lyman Trade Rifle. They are cheaper yet. Cabela's and Lyman are both made by Investarms of Italy and are quality arms. Here are a couple of places to check out the Lymans: http://www.dnrsports.com/ and http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/ .Good luck

If we haven't commented its because we don't have anything more to add than already has been said.

What's wrong with the Cabela guns? Price, brass, and junky rear sight. Other than that, the gun is made by the same people who make the Lyman GPR. The barrels are the same. The Lyman will cost your less. If this is a hunting rifle, it doesn't need the brass. And that rear sight is so bad, its a joke. Most owners soon replace it with a different, and better rear sight.

I got a cabela,s investarm hawkins, Investarm also makes the lyman. this gun looks and shoots better than i ever though possible. but the rear sight is junk, you will need to replace it.

it gos for $369.00 got mine on sale $329.00

The Cabelas guns are good quality guns. The "sporterized version is stepping away from traditional. The carbines short barrel reduces your sight radius and limits the amount of powder you can burn too much for my tastes.
If you really like the "Hawken", check out the Lyman Trade Rifle before you buy one from Cabelas.

That said, I also vote for the Great Plains Rifle for the $ you want to spend. They are great rifles in my opinion. I have both flint and percussion models. Love 'em both. Try and get your hands on one to get a feel of it. It's completely different than any of the others.

Good luck gettin' your Dad in on the fun.

Check on the rate of twist on the Sporterized and the Carbine model. It my be twisted for conicals or sabot bullets. If you want to keep the cost of shooting low, go with the 1:48 twist rifles and PRB.

Cookie,
My very first ML was the Cabellas sporterized Hawken in .50 cal and I liked it just fine. Nice gun and a good shooter.

I have the Cabela's Hawken and I have a CVA. I think they are basically the same gun. I am happy with the Cabela's and have not spent enough time to get the CVA shooting how I like it.

If I were you I would have your Dad find a used CVA, Cabela's, TC or Lyman gun and you save to buy something completely different and nicer. Maybe a trade gun or some full stock gun.

But that is just my opinion.

With a GPR from Midsouth you get so much more bang for your buck. Look at one of your old Cabelas catalogs and see what Cabelas sells a GPR for and you will understand. A GPR is the best under $500.00 production Rifle on the Market.

The Lyman reconditioned thing is a good deal and often overlooked. But you gotta be at the right place at the right time, Maybe they would send you an email notice when one becomes available-just a thought.

If you like the shiny brass of the CVA, T/C or Cabelas Hawkens, instead of the Plain look of the GPR do what I did. I bought a used T/C Hawken in a Pawn Shop for $100.00. I refinished the stock and ordered a new Round Ball barrel 32" long 1 in 66" twist for shooting round balls from Thomson Center for $185.00 plus $14.95 shipping. I installed primitive sights, $20.00 and I have a vertually new Rifle for $320.00. I can sell the old barrel on Ebay for $50.00+ if I want and that would make my Rifle only $250.00.

I have the Investarm Hawken, which is the same gun that Cabelas sells. I also have a Lyman Great Plains Rifle. They're both built by the same company and are high quality guns. I love each for different reasons. I love the look of the GPR, but to be honest, the Hawken just fits me better and I shoot better with it.

My particular Hawken is picky about powder and charge though. It's the only gun I own that prefers FFG, which is kind of a pain considering all the others prefer FFFG. It's also picky about charge weight. Go a couple grains to either side of it's preferred load and the groups turn into patterns.

I would have a hard time making a recommendation either way. If you can handle them to see which fits you better, that's always a good thing. If you're going to mail order, I'd probably give the nod to the Hawken. You can find them cheaper than Cabelas has them for if you look around. I haven't checked prices lately, but Dixie used to sell them for less and theirs don't have Cabelas stamped on the barrel.

Yup! What he said.

Go for the .54. You won't regret it.
