In a blown up photo it appears Heston’s rilfe has two rawhide pieces shrunk around the barrel and stock. Dang it, now I’m going to have to watch that movie again. Thanks for sharing.

On the gun I purchased, the rear sight is adjustable, and the front sight a little higher than on Henrys rifle, but according to documentation, his was aged down for the movie. I see a blade front sight, and then a dovetailed very low rear sight.

Bill Tyler's rifle, played by Charlton Heston as seen at the NRA museum in Fairfax, Virginia. Some thumb tacks on this rifle. I would look for real brass tacks, not just the brass coated steel tacks.

I remember in the mini series Centennial, they repaired a broken rifle stoch with boiled hide.

Try to find tacks made somewhere other than China, the heads pop right off of those.

In the '70's in Oregon I shot muzzleloaders with a fellow by the name of Jules Martino who said he was at the filming of some of the movie. He said that the part of the vendors display tipping over by a bunch of drunk mountain men wasn't planned but really happened so it was left in the movie. Jules had a really interesting carving in his patch box. I wonder if he's still around?

I just watched most of that movie tonight. You are right. Unless he got the flinter after escaping from the Black Deer? I'll have to pay attention when I finish it tomorrow.

That's not all. It doesn't have the leather wraps, there's a different nose cap, trigger guard, and patch box.
The one in the museums nose cap and trigger guard looks like TC. It's a different gun and probably, the
one as mentioned earlier, picked up as he was escaping. Not the one he started out with and in the promo
pictures.

I have the answer to this one boys...it's because the director said so!!! It's always because the director said so!!!

Seriously though, I believe it's the rifle after he made John Colter's run. Although it's been awhile since I've watched the movie.

I’ve read Notchybobs post a couple of times now. While I agree that it mentions the flintlock I can’t find a single pic of Heston holding anything other than a percussion rifle. I think I need to watch the movie again.

Directors don't always pay attention to details. Freddie in The Wild Bunch had a bandage on different legs in different scenes, So did Ben Johnson is a movie I don't recall the name of. I think John Wayne may have had the same thing in one of his movies. It may have been Rooster Cogburn.
