Made it all my self barrel is 4130 chromolly made on my lathe, rifled by hand and all the parts are hand filed. The stock is scarlet oak I milled on my sawmill. My first stock I decided looked too fragile, my second stock was Siberian elm and shattered while proofing. View attachment 201488View attachment 201489View attachment 201491View attachment 201492
I’d like to try rifling a barrel but I can’t get it in my head how to do it without lots of equipment.

I rifled mine the way Johnathan browning did way back when but with a few updates. Be ready for a lot of work though cut one groove and rotate the barrel, you can barely see the twist in my square bar because I rifled mine at 1 in 120 inch twist I placed a piece of tool steel in the end and I had a set screw so I could adjust it as it cut away material.

Did you heat the bar to get the twist? And how did you keep a constant teist to it?

I just cold twisted it. It may not be perfect but it is better than carving grooves out of a rould log. I figured how much twist I needed and figured how much twist during the length of the barrel, then I just clamped it in the vice and used a crescent wrench the length of the barrel away from the vice faceto twist the correct percent of a twist that was needed. Be sure to figure how far from your block that twists the rod your barrel will be clamped.

If you hear the steel prior to twisting you have to be sure the steel is all the same temperature, cold twisting you have to plan for springback.

Very interesting thread. Nice hand work. Think I would need just one shot for a lifetime. Congrats on a project well done. Hat's off to you.

When I was young, under 60 , I had to quit bench resting 10 Ga. 3.5 " unmentionable smooth bores , due to post 5 shot head trauma. Same w/ benching .375 H+H , unmentionable. Head pain comes on , and was told by doctor , it's like "shaken baby syndrome" , in a child. Got rid of both those torture machines , and built m/l guns to replace them.
