I got lucky a while back. I found a T/C Hawkins .50 caliber flintlock on one of the auctions and ended up getting it for $175.00 . Needless to say when it came to the house and looked like it had never been shot I was so happy.

Roundball was kind enough to coach me through getting the lock updated, and with the help of him and many others on this site, I have been having a blast. I have learned more about flintlocks in 7 months then I had all my black powder life.

Watch the gun auctions. Look for T/C Hawkins and Renegades in flintlock. Sometimes you can really get a good deal on them.

Cay, have you shot the TC Hawken very much...does the improved lock work well, vent liner give fast ignition, etc?

Some guy has one listed on the forum classifieds but I can't get him to return emails... :boohoo:

Since I had the new lock put in I have put about 400 rounds through it. The lock time is really excellent now. This rifle is much easier on the flints then my Trade Rifle. The Trade Rifle really eats the flints fast. Maybe that is why I got such good luck out of that agate in the Trade Rifle.

I was shooting in the rain the other day and think I might have figured out a way to keep it shooting in wet weather. I kept the cow knee on the lock. I kept an alcohol patch in the pan, held there by the frizzen. Right before I would prime, I'd wipe the flint, prime, and then fire. That way the flint did not get a chance to get too wet. I was getting real good ignition that way.
