My only thought about a complete gun is that it’s likely cheaper than assembling one from pieces an parts. Last tc percussion lock I saw was $175. Even a trashed barrel is $100, then $200 for Bob Hoyt. A stock with the rest of the furniture, another $125ish.

Start with a complete gun and work forward from there. I’ve swapped barrels and locks plenty of times with no real issues.

Those prices are really cheap, even with what pops up on the classifieds here. The monsters that cannibalize anything they can get their hands on are trying to get 3-4 times what a complete example is worth. And if they think they have something special holy cow, stand back.
Without divulging what I paid I have a complete TC Hawken stock with a 1" barrel channel on the way. I was happy to get it when I haggled the seller down to about half the price the last 2 I've seen come up for sale.

It's interesting that this thread came up. I've given thought to picking up a 54 and maybe even the rare 58 barrel so I can play around with different calibers using my 50cal Renegade. All my stuff is 50cal and have been wanting to add a 54 and 58. Don't know why but it never dawned on me that one could swap back and forth between a percussion and flint lock too.

I bought this stock on eBay for my 54 WMC barrel. Turns out that it was a kit Renegade stock that the forearm was shortened so the under rib wouldn't have to be shortened, steel butt plate switched out for a rubber one and some carvings added. It was a hard deal to pass up considering the hardware alone was worth more than I paid for it. So if your looking for a Renegade or a close resemblance you have lots of options.

Here's another Renegade I put together approximately 20 years ago. I bought an entire gun that was pretty beat up but it didn't matter for my purpose at the time. I was looking for a stock for a 40 caliber 1:16 twist Green Mountain barrel that I could use in the muzzleloader league I belonged to. A schuetzen style butt plate was added to assist me in holding up this front heavy 34" barrel. The tang sight gave me an extra long sight radius. An under rib and ramrod were never added because I always carried a range rod while shooting. I'm actually considering shortening the barrel to 26" and adding the under rib and ramrod so I can use it for hunting with the 360gn bullet I had a mold made for. Quite honestly 34" was way more barrel than I needed for the 200yd range I was using it for.

@Indy Durtdigger "You are correct that 99%+ are fully interchangeable"

Your quote, not mine. When something is 99%+ interchangeable, then you can reliably say parts are interchangeable.

"Without a set starting point your just collecting parts that may not end up fitting together." Again your quote, not mine. When you say things like this it leads people to think you may not know what you are talking about.

My mistake. Glad you appreciate my opinion, as anyone could honestly make it based upon what you posted..

Holy cow you're petty.

A schuetzen style butt plate was added to assist me in holding up this front heavy 34" barrel.

I stumbled into a virtually unused Green Mountain 54 caliber drop in for a Renegade for an embarrassingly low price, so I grabbed it. It's a 32" 1:70 and makes the Renegade look like a piece of artillery compared to the stock .50 barrel that came with my rifle. I very much like what you did with the schutzen butt plate, I might have to look around for one of those. If you don't mind me asking and causing additional digression, which front and rear sight did you put on that rifle? Thanks!

The front globe sight is FS-SHARPS-2 from Track of the Wolf . Lyman also has globe sights to fit a 3/8" dovetail which is probably what your Green Mountain has.

The rear sight is a Thompson Center Vernier sight. No longer made but come up often on eBay.

The particular butt plate I used also came from Track of the Wolf but unfortunately are no longer available but can be had on the second hand market. What I like about that one is that the back was flat so it didn't take any intricate wood working to install.

Ok what do you guys think, I just bought this TC Renagade 54cal yesterday off of guns international for $429 shipped?. It's in excellent condition, mirror bore. Was this a ok deal? Im a newbie & have gone kinda over the deep end on Hawken style muzzleloaders. This is the 4th one ive bought in the last month and half lol.
