If your going to cast heavy bullets don't use a bottom pour. If you are going to make balls go for it. The Lee Pot is a good one. Ron

you can get a 20lb lee in either bottom pour or dip from the top for less than 100 bucks.

I have two Lee and one Lyman and they are all good but the Lee pots are about 1/3 the cost...that's hard to beat.

One of my bottom pour pots will make heavy minie bullets just fine. The secret is to open the pour spout by drilling it out a little larger to allow for a heavier flow of the melt. Just have to pay attention because it fills the mold quickly.

I have the Lee Magnum Melter, holds 20lbs, it has been great. It is for dipping which is the best way IMHO, put it on 7 1/2 temp an your good to go, plus it has a wide opening which I like. The bottom pours will leak on you if your not careful and the tops of them are too narrow for me.

i have one like this:

I love it, you just have to wait until it gets hot. it will melt a small puck of lead as you cast. I believe its a Hilts

Thanks Guys..I'll check all the reccomended pots. Up until now I have been casting on hot coals or open fire; 1) it seems the temp is inconsistent and somewhat hard to control. 2) I sweat like a pig while doing it...lol
Hoping the lead pot will cure these issues!.

I am thinking of getting an electric lead casting pot..any ideas on which ones are the best to get? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money. All comments are welcome.

If you can find a Rapine pot, grab it. The best there is, especially if you're casting big minie balls which need high heat to fill out in the mould. Mine will go to 1,000 degrees.

Nothing beats a ladle for pouring heavy bullets. Nothing!

I have just bought a Lee 10lbs pot that you have to ladle out the top. Just came in the mail Friday worked great after I figured out the heat thing. Still going to use the old coffee can to melt dirty lead into ingots. Ran a bunch of round balls worked great.

I have one of the Lee Production Pots. It is bottom pour and works great. I have ran several thousand balls through it so far with no problems. If you want to try that style out before buying one, let me know and we can try to get together one of these weekends.

Another vote for Lee. I have a 10lb bottom pour and 20lb ladle. Like them both, you get more than what you pay for. I think most of the problems folks have with them are self induced. Good luck and be very safe with the hot lead.

If you're concerned about the cost, then the Lee is a no-brainer. They're not perfect (temp. control leaves a bit to be desired and the bottom-pours can be a bit finicky) but are very good value for money. With a bit of work they can be turned into a very nice pot.
