Thought's On This Kentucky Rifle?

This just hit the door step, after purchase on this forum. I have been waiting for a chance at a built Kentucky for awhile.

I would like any opinions on this rifle, even the bad ones! I would also like to ask if this rifle has been made up from two pieces of wood? You will notice a diagonal line on each side of the stock :hmm: This does not bother me, just curious! The barrel is a GR Douglas in .45 and the rifle was built in 1972. The bore is mint! I think the 450.00 paid was a very fair price, and I am very happy!

Thoughts please??

MB, you must have bought that rifle from Santy Clause!! 450.00 is more of a gift price for such work! The splice in the forestock looks very good and professional from your pictures. Should never present a problem. What is the barrel length? You should be happy, that rifle will last you a lifetime and then some. You will not lose any $$$ in the future if you ever sell it. Enjoy!!

 

That's a rifle I'd be proud to own. I especially like the carving "around" the escutcheon in pic 7. Really makes it stand out.

That's a honkin big vent hole! You may want to re-bush that vent.

I'd guess that is a splice line but it's not a bad job of it.

That is one pretty rifle and at a great price as well! GR Douglas is located here in WV and as far as I know have not made ml barrels for sometime but when they did they were rated very well. Let us know how it shoots and what load you use.

 

Looks like a splice, but remember with these guns the barrel holds the forestock, and not the other way around lke modern rifles. Looks like you got that gun for about half price. Looks to be well taken care of. Have fun with it.

A bargain at that price. A question tho - and I am not trying to be picky. But the shape of the butt stock through the wrist area (ie from the breech plug and tang to the bump of the stock) seems is quite square and not as rounded and sleek as some I have seen.

Would this be intentional - ie representative of a particular styler of gun?

Isn't it against the law to steal rifles in Florida? You must have really been a good boy this year. Beautiful rifle, doubly so at that price. The splice and I'm not so sure it is one as the woodgrain appears to match although I can't think of any other reason for the diagonal line, would not matter to me in the least. You will be able to tell for certain the first time you remove the barrel.

A very good buy for the money! The parts today would be nearly twice that, and the mint bore is a definate plus. That said, the architecture, and general shaping of things leave much to be desired. I see very little that was properly done. Overall, I would say very amatueresh, but if it was a first for the builder, it shows there was promise for the future.
As far as value for the money, you did well. It beats hell out the imported, mass produced, so called Kentucky rifles, and is not bad looking at a glance. I hope you don't take offence at my comments, but you asked.

well, i would concur with Wick, but, having said that, i think you got an excellent deal on a rifle whch will no doubt give you pleaseure for the rest of you life and, if properly maintained, for the life of your hiers as well.

i'd worry (if you're being picky) about the architecture (or lack thereod) more than the repair, which looks pretty good really, and is certianly 'in good faith.'

all in all, well done.

The barrel is 42"

When I saw it in the forum classifieds, I jumped on it quick! I said to myself, that it is probably gone :shake:

When that email to buy came through I was thrilled!

I would assume it is sighted in but won't know until the range trip. I would guess a starting charge would be 55 grains fffg?
