Pretty much any wood can be carved into a pipe but keep in mind some may release toxic chemicals as the heat is applied. Walnut from what I hear is toxic if ingested so probably is if burned and inhaled. I would stick with fruit wood or briar just my 2 cents

Doesn't surprise me. Walnut dust irritates my eyes and sinuses sumtin' fierce when I work it in my shop.

walnut is my favorite wood to work with but i don't use it much anymore Ive been in the hospital several times from breathing in the dust so i don't think i would want to smoke it

flintlock62,
Could I use a propane torch to "break in" an olive wood pipe ? I've got a large olive tree in my front yard that my wife wants pruned and I hate to waste stuff. I smoke a cigar once in a while and I would smoke my butts in it,again hate to waste stuff

I don't know about breaking olive wood in by torching it. It would need to be aged, just like any other wood.

By breaking in, I meant smoking the pipe. I smoke briar pipes and they all have a break-in period to get a coat of carbon lining the inside of the bowl.

flintlock62,
Thank you for the tip. I have a cut branch thats been outside for a least a couple of months, is this a long enough time for seasoning ? :idunno:
I would like to make one something like what codymobley made.

Just finished this one the other day. Made it from a piece of cherry burl I had in the shop. Its 4" long. Guess I was inspired by Devil Anse Hatfields pipe from the movie last week.

Sorry, Nilo, that one I can't answer. The wood has to dry. I would imagine about 2~3 years, but could be wrong.
Someone else may help here, but there MAY be a way to dry it out a bit in your oven.

Here's a Gaga D'amor that Miss Tudy made the other week from elk and antelope pieces that a hunter would have left over from other items. There is a separate bag for tobacco and a striker or Lucifers would also go into the bag. Then the pipe would hold everything together..Bud
