I just got a tomahawk kit from RE Davis. It looks very nice. While looking through the instruction booklet on the construction of pipe tomahawks.

The one question I have thus far is about the mouth piece on the pipe handle. It can be either a poured pewter mouth piece or some sort of thin tube sticking out the end of the handle. What is this thin tube and what would it be made out of?

rolled sheet brass or silver would be a good choice...Im not sure of the exact date when seamless extruded tubing came into play, but for an early phase one or two type "rifleman" pipe ax, I dont think seamless tubing was available.

Buck, the ones you see these days almost all seem to have either a brass or copper tube, depending on the era you are replicating...the original pipe hawks and the ones i'm partial to, just had the end of the handle carved into a mouth piece...i would suggest the brass fitting for the for the wedgekey as a template, the oval shape is the perfect mouth piece size...the problem with the tubing, i'm told, is when using the hawk for other than smoking the tubes could be bent closed and need to be replaced...Lee

Ive wondered about pipe hawks.

Where they used, or would the hole passing through the center of the handle make them suseptible to breaking?

Just thinking out loud.

Men's hawks run on the small side, and are used for... war.

Pipe hawks were certainly carried. Tecumseh was often noted carrying a fancy one. I guess they would hold up long enough to do "the job."

You probably wouldn't want to use one for a hawk throw, though. :shake:

NO I couldnt see throwing one, But to strike at an enemy or split some kinlin might be too much for a hollow handle.

But ive been wrong before..
