I have a 10 bore SXS Pedersoli shotgun and wish to know if using top Hat musket caps will improve ignition. Turkey Hunting in Vermont is coming in May and our cold wet springs are a concern. Thoughts?

My experiments with musket caps tell me that most available current production musket caps are no more potent than #11 "magnum" caps. This is just the sad reality of an overly litigious society. :shake: :td:

I don't believe you need the musket caps if you are shooting real BP. Alstead Gunshop has it, Hunting and Sporting Supply (I 91 exit 7, cross Ct River take first left on Lover's Lane) has it, shop in West Lebanon does.

I have not had ignition problems with any of the #11 percussion caps in Vermont. Well, after I pulled the caps and left the gun in the snow so I could go into the mostly frozen creek to get my dog out I did have a miss-fire.

The most readily available caps are Remington, and they appear to be made up by Nobel Dynamite, and are hotter.

I read that the CCI musket caps were made specifically for blank rounds and folks were having trouble getting good ignition with them on their CW muskets, so I did a search and found some RWS top hat type musket caps, they are sure fire every time, in fact I have to wear a glove on my left hand, the one on the fore stock or the silly things burn my fingers where they wrap around the stock, can't find a flash guard for musket nipple, wish I could, might have to try and make one.

With my 1777 Charleville, I bought a 1803 Harpers Ferry converted caplock. I have a touch hole liner that can be removed and a drum and nipple to replace the liner.
I have several sleeves of Navy Arms top hat musket caps and they light the 70 grains of FFg and launch the .69 calibre roundball. Good groups at 50 yards.

Vulture,
Yes the RWS 1081 musket caps are very serviceable. They reliably fulminate Goex Fg. The CCI 0301 caps are weak. The old CCI 0300 that came in the "LIBERTY" tin are still the best that I have used. I reserve these few for clearing miss fires now.

The new CCI 0301's will work if using FFFG in smaller bores but #11's work fine fore that.

If anyone knows of any other musket caps that are currently produced or sources for out of production caps, information would be greatly appreciated.

We all gots are thang! I have an affinity for "top hats." :hatsoff:

I use Triple7 in my Pedersoli 10ga sxs and I thought the musket caps would be hotter and that they'd ignite the Triple7 better...well I was wrong. If anything they were more of a pain. I shoot the Win BP substitute #11 caps and they work flawless. Never even a hang fire.
