As new member of community I am pleased to be here among fellow flint riflemen. Common practice has it the fussy touch hole is drilled center, sunrise location, level with top of pan. I am currently in the process of assembling a Track model 1803 flint and the sum of machined wood and metal dimensions leaves the Colerain breach plug face dead center of pan. To remove the breach, drill through and alter the plug facing is something I would rather not attempt for breach plugs are torqued tight by machine. The Colerain barrel is as far back in the stock as the existing machined inletting allows thus the decision to drill slightly ahead of breach facing: either a 1/16 inch touch hole and go primitive or a White Lighnin' liner. My question is, having never faced this issue in other projects, will it effect ignition by moving touch hole a tad ahead of center and breach face?

I'm having trouble following your logic here. You don't want to remove the breech plug because it's machine fit? I don't know who told you that but a Colerain plug is no more difficult to remove than any other makers and should be done to ensure it is fit properly. You should also have it unbreeched when you drill for the vent or liner as you want to ensure your breech is clear after doing so. I would never consider building a gun on a barrel I had not personally verified the breeching on and have been known to pull them on others' builds just to make sure they are right.

You have to do one of two things before you procede with this build. Either you need to set the barrel back further or you need to shorten your breechplug. Either one should put the vent where it needs to be without interfering with the breech plug. Determining which way to go is determined by other factors such as plug length and architecture.

Enjoy, J.D.

What's preventing further bbl set back? Tang inletted, bbl pinned or some other consideration? Doesn't seem right that the breechplug face is in line w/ the pan center on a kit sold by TOW . W/ the lock already inletted, the bbl is setback to accommodate either a plain TH or a TH liner so they are centered on the pan .

If you choose to keep the bbl location as is, then you should use a plain TH centered on the pan and groove the plug face...or move the TH center forward and leave it off center on the pan or grind the forward surface of the pan to center the TH. Using a TH liner would entail too large a plug face groove.

Irregardless....the breechplug will have to be removed....you can then double check the plug face position.

Sounds as though you didn't set the bbl back far enough to accommodate whatever style of TH you want......Fred

Thank you and others for your input. I will do what is correct and suggested and that is to remove the Colerain breach plug and make adjustments to it so that the TH is centered on the pan where it needs to be. Track offers a great 1803 kit and I was impressed with the fit and precision of metal to wood. Note, also, that little wiggle room is offered in this kit. My error initially, with all this precision going on in the kit elsewhere, was to assume the Colerain barrel's breach plug face would be behind center line of pan. I was wrong to assume on that critical point.

Boo Boo. I have a bunch of flintlocks. The touch holes are anywhere that the builders or I happened to put them. I really can't tell any difference between low in the pan, high, front or back. As long as the hole is 1/16" or greater the ignition is going to be fast enough for your purposes.

All pre shaped, pre inlet stocks leave material at the rear of the barrel channel.

With the locks position established by the mortice the first thing that the builder needs to do is to locate the face of the breech plug and mark this location on the outside flat of the barrel.

He then needs to remove wood at the rear of the barrel channel to move the barrel aft until the face of the breech plug is 3/16" to 1/4" behind the center of the pan.

Only after doing this should any thought be given to drilling or installing the vent hole or the vent liner.
