How do you fellers touch up a flint that is not entirely used up but needs sharpening?

Do you remove it from the lock?

Do you sharpen it while still in the cock?

Use a pin or just hammer directly on it?

Do you carry a special hammer for this?

I leave it in the cock. I have a 6 penny common nail with the pointy end cut off straight and notched (about half way though) so it will rest on the flint. I tap the head of the nail with a small hammer. Works for me.

I leave it in the jaws. I cary a small piece of copper ingot. Gently tap the edge of flint I mean GENTLY.... Tiny specs will break off leaving a sharp edge. I easiy get 70 to 90 shots on averge.
Some times more, depending on quality of flnt and lock.

Pull back the cock with your thumb so that it's not engaged in the full cock notch, put your index finger under the flint edge, tap the edge with your tool of choice and a little row of flakes will be on your index finger when you ease the cock into the notch.

I just press it against the frizzen. Works really slick and it's quick. I get longer flint life doing that than any other way.

That Is he process I found works the best also. Might have to move the Flint out a bit, but It works....

Does a flint wear down evenly or does it normally wear down more on one side. I'm currently shooting on my first flint and notice the left side of the flint wearing faster than the right side. Should I knapp down the right side even though it still sparks good? Greg

Before going ay further, let me tell you that any time you are knapping flint, you must wear safety glasses.
Yes, I have done all of the methods you mentioned. What you do often depends on the circumstances. If you are at home and are cleaning your rifle or just fiddling with it and it needs some re-sharpening of the flint. I may use my flint hammer and tap along the edge knocking off tiny chips until I have it sharpened. Do not do this in the house, do it outside in the yard. You sure don't want any of those tiny shards of flint on the floor in your house. They are tiny razors. I also have a little brass rod that a friend gave me that I use to place on the edge of the flint and rap with my flint hammer to knock off tiny chips. The rod is a more precise method of knapping the flint while it is in the lock. If I am in the field and need a quick re-sharpening of my flint, I often use a method that my late friend Paul Valindigham showed me one day at Friendship. You cock the hammer and use your left thumb (I'm right handed so if you are left handed just use the opposite hand) to raise your frizzen. Then while holding onto the cock, release the trigger and ease the flint down to the frizzen. Move the frizzen so that the flint is just touching the heel of the frizzen. Hold the frizzen in that position with your left thumb and move the cock back to full cock. Now pull the trigger and let the cock fall with the flint striking the heel of the frizzen. This will knock off several small chips from the edge of your flint and it will be ready to go again. No, it does no harm to any part and it is a perfectly good way to quickly re-sharpen your flint in the field. A word of warning: Whenever doing any of these procedures make absolutely sure that you are wearing safety glasses. I tiny piece of flint popping up into your eye will do serious damage to it and will be extremely painful

Start with frizzen open, and cock full forward.
Tilt frizzen back, and press firmly down on top of flint.
Draw cock back slowly while maintaining firm pressure on frizzzen.
As edge of flint passes edge of frizzen, flint will be trued and sharpened. No tools, minumum of fussing and flailing.

Depends on several factors. Flints are hunks of rock that have been banged on. Even wear is not to be expected but it does happen. Quality of the lock and condition of the frizzen also come into play. Knapp evenly. I use a small brass hammer I made. I leave at half cock, put a finger under cock to support, hold rifle and with my third hand operate the hammer. Takes a little practice.

Which part needs clarification? I'll be glad to make another stab at a better explanation of any part that isn't clear.

Very good video! I noticed he refers to the frizzen as a "hammer". Is this just the way those with british accents speak of that part of a flintlock? Or was he merely calling it a hammer because that is how it is being employed for sharpening a flint. Now it is a frizzen, now it is a hammer.

Thanks for posting that video ! Some of us flint newbies need all the help we can get! Greg. :)

Original and technically correct term for what we call the frizzen is/was "hammer". What we currently call the hammer (the part that holds the flint) was/is the "cock". Ye gotta speak flinchlock in four or five dialects to understand what is happening here.
