Here's the latest update on the Track of the Wolf Bucks County flintlock rifle kit.

With all the bad weather during the last couple of months, I've gotten a lot of work done on the rifle.

In this update I get the butt stock into its final configuration...ready for finish sanding.

As always, I'll remind you that I'm no master builder. This is my first build in over 20 years, so I'm always open to hearing ways I can do a better job on my next rifle.

Mr. B. when you took that chisle out and hit at the top of the comb I was like "OH NO he's going to knock out the top of it." Watching you work I was scared...I'm going to be terrified when I do it to mine. Looking good it's coming together nicely. I bought a U gouge like yours and yours looks like it cuts sooo much easier than mine does; guess I need to sharpen it a bit.

nice vid- thanks for the post

... by way of nit-picking, avoid if possible the use of sandpaper without a backer or sanding block, especially when you're removing material ... I've found that this seems to bring out the little dips and valleys rather than even things out.

(learned this the hard way)

I run that gouge over a stone every few minutes when I'm using it to keep it as sharp as I can get it.

he's right - especially gouges with a v or sweep of any kind ... you need to keep these as sharp as you can: neurosurgery sharp ... otherwise they'll develop ideas above their station and start doing stuff they want to do rather than what you intended, which results in bad results!
