Shouldnt but does. Just because it's 4140 doesn't mean it's hardened and tempered. Respectively, they are not. Manufacturing costs are lower being they are not from the factory along, with it also being a cast head this adds to the cost savings. To each his own, but for a hawk that's being used as a camp tool, hardening/ tempering is a must in my book which is an easy to do process that's certainly beneficial. I also don't need to harden and temper the various chisels/ tools I forge for them to work, however I absolutely hate to sharpen so it certainly a must and greatly extends tool life.
