I got mine from Dixie Gun Works. I use it in my fire starting kit. DGW doesn't recommend it's use in cleaning though.

You can go to one of them holistic herbal places and buy flax seed by the pound.

Grows like a weed supposedely, and you just cut it down, dry it and separate the tow fromthe actual flax fibers.

We've got one of them wierd ( :haha: :youcrazy: ) stores in my area, and I was considering this myself... just haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you beat me to it... let me how it works for you.....

Gemoke,

I got a hank of tow from Smiling Fox Forge. Have not used it yet, but it looks nice and clean.

Yeah, I use it to field clean my trade gun. I got big bunches of it from a couple of different weavers.

Tow bought from commercial sources ought to be washed and dried before you use it. It probably has oils in it that need to be washed out.

I had heard or read someplace (forget which and where) that jute cordage, the kind which is not waxed, which I have seen at Ace Hardware can be used. You cut off the lengths you need and comb it out into strands. I bought a macreme plant hanger at a yard sale, a huge thing for a couple of bucks, cut it into workable lengths, and then combed/untwisted the pieces into individual strands. Tried to use it for making a fire. Wow! Took off like a house afire. I am thinking of trying it in my rifle instead of cleaning patches but haven't gotten around to trying it there as yet. Note: if you decide to do this....either do it outside or over a large piece of plastic, those fibers give off little pieces that get broken off in the process and you wind up looking like you fell into some kind of lint/thread dump.

You might find a supply of raw linen or flax at a sewing supply store, or anywhere they sell yarn. I have used Jute for making fires, and it works as well as hemp rope- maybe better.
