Has any of you used the TOW plan for the 1750 to 1760 English fowler for a build ? A fowler of some sort will be my next project and was just considering this one. Any thought would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jack

I’ve found their plans very helpful. I have done NWG, Isaiah Hines (I did Lancaster) and Tennessee rife using their plans. Full of notes and variations.

I finished their fusil de chasse recently. And their plan helped out quite a bit giving details and measurements for placing the barrel pin underlugs, the sight and a few other things. I think you'll enjoy the fowler project

OMG that would be an inletting nightmare.

Hi,
Tracks plans are fat and clunky. If you want to see what mid-18th century English fowlers really look like go here:

Thanks Dave,
I checked the TOW English fowler plan against the dims that you gave and they are almost exact as yours behind the lock but forward, TOW plan is a little chuncky by about 1/8" high and wide from lock too muzzle. The drop on the stock is only about 2 1/4" at the heel on TOW which isn't enough for this long necked country boy, I think 3" drop would be better for me. I'm about 6'4" tall.

Hi Jack,
Use the dimensions I show in my tutorial. The Track plans are based on a gun built by a contemporary maker who probably is not familiar with the real guns. English fowlers are beautiful and functional guns but very few American contemporary makers get them right.

Thanks Dave, I will use your dimensions. You do beautiful work.

I think one of the reasons we are driven to make these wonderful firearms is so we can experience what it was like to shoot and hunt and even to protect our families with them . (I hope I never have to protect myself with one of them). If they are not made correctly we won't have that experience when it's completed. Mine will probably be a winter project starting next fall. In the meantime it looks like I have some research to do which is great fun.

Thanks to all of you for your input

Here is one from the track plans, us newbies need a little direction and are oblivious to exactly correct. This is my second gun build. The picture shows in my preview but not on the post. I couldn't upload one from the site either.

I don’t know how people pull that off. I mean it a learned skill.... but dude!

I feel the same way. Just don't know how they do it. Really impresses me, both the patience and skill it takes. I can build a shed or a barn, rough sort of work. The intricate detail stuff like that I leave to more talented men.

Funny thing, I am quoting your post to suggest resizing the picture. But as i type this your picture is showing in the quote. :dunno: so now I'll post this and see if it shows in this post.

Nice gun. I have the track plan but not sure it will ever be a build.

I can't see anything but a little square with and X in it, but when I Quote is shows up.

I hope mine comes out that well
