Howdy all,I have a problem with my trade pistol. It is one of Curlys last northwest guns I aquired.I shoot a smoothbore and win some of the rondys around here so know the drill .I set the base of the front blade level with the flat and had the full blade above the flat and had to aim 1 1/2 foot below the target to hit the black at 25 yards. I used .600 round ball,.017 patch with moosemilk lube and 50 grains of goex FF powder .Is this normal for these guns accuracy ? . It's like I would need a front sight a couple of inches high .Any help would be appericated and I will say thanks in advance.Danney

The first thing I would do would be to decrease the size of the powder load.

For what it's worth, Dixie Gunworks catalog says the original powder charge for a .67 caliber Tower Flintlock pistol was 35 grains.

Heavy powder loads will create heavy recoil.
This can result in the barrel rising considerably above the point of aim before the ball leaves the barrel which will result in very high hits on the target.

It may sound "wimpy" but a 30-35 grain powder load isn't something to be sneezed at.
The slightly smaller .54 caliber 8" pistol barrel Lyman tested for their "BLACK POWDER HANDBOOK & LOADING MANUAL" with a 35 grain load of GOEX 2Fg had a muzzle velocity of 792 fps with a energy of 309 ft/lbs.

Howdy, Thanks I will try this . I talked to the previous owner and he said he would hold the front sight about 1 inch above the rear flat to get it on target .I looked at crown of barrel thought it might be off but didn't look bad. Got to be a better way though. I will keep trying. Thanks Dan
