I have a like-new percussion 12 gauge smoothbore with a lock marked "Traditions". It has an octagonal to round blued barrel with a single brass bead as an end sight. I came with a blued metal ramrod. The barrel is marked "Arcesa-Spain Black Powder Only Cl.12" and "700 Kp/cm F2". The half-stock, which has a schnable forend, appears to be similar to nicely figured walnut, but darker, and the straight grip has nice checkering that looks to be done by hand instead of machine. The butt plate is case hardened. Does anyone have experience with this particular smoothbore? If so, what loads do you recommend? Thank, Tom

I believe that you have a very pretty gun that hasn't been imported into the U.S. in large numbers for many years, although they are still available for sale new in Europe and rather pricey too.

The general rule for loading powder/shot is a 1:1 ratio, but in reality a little more shot generally has more effective performance. Most 12 gauges perform adequately with a load of 85-90 grains of powder and 100-110 grains of shot. These loads can be altered minimally up or down depending on the shooting purpose. Most people use some sort of wad in between the powder and shot, either a vegetable fiber, wool wad, modern plastic shotshell was or an over powder card. An over shot card is then placed over the shot to help hold it in place.

Here's a helpful powder measure setting chart for measuring shot that's listed under "member resources":
