Howdy!

Shot a brand new out of box 1860 Army on Saturday. Before shooting, it was disassembled and cleaned. The only part not cleaned was the hammer and trigger innards. Used 25g of GOEX 3f and the #11 caps fit well on the nipples. No pinching needed.

#1 - BOOM!
#2 - Click
#3 - BOOM!
#4 - Click
#5 - BOOM!
#6 - BOOM!

Fired #2 again, BOOM!
Fired #4 again, BOOM!

So, loaded her up again, and had to go through the cylinder twice so all chambers would fire (some fired, some needed a second go-around).

Cylinder 3, same story. AND, it seemed the hammer got a bit lazy when de-cocking it.

Shoots well, and it is different from the Walker.

I did take her completely apart, cleaned, lubed everything. Have not shot her again.

So, what do you guys think? Also, what loads are you using in the 1860 Army's?

Thanks!

James

Sounds to me as though the caps were not completly seated on the nipples, it has happened to me and that's usually the culprit

What he said, caps to small on the nipples.
# 10 CCI caps seem to be a little smaller than the Remintons. That's the same thing that would happen on my 1851 Pietta. :cursing:
I put on new ampco bronze nipples and solved the miss firing cap problems with mine. The #10 rems fit nice now.

Try remington caps. Much easier to set off than cci. Take a look at the edge of the one piece wooden grip directly behind the spring. Some times the spring contacts this as it drives the hammer forward. Slows down the hammer and makes it more subject to blowback.

Would this be the correct nipple?

Yes that's the ones.
Don't know why it sez #11 caps, #10 Remingtons fit real nice (CCI are tight) On mine.

Howdy,

Got the Ampco nipples for the 1860 and the Walker. Outstanding results. I just kept shooting until the cylinders bound up. AND, the #10 Remmington caps were perfect.

THANKS!

I've been using 30gr fff with felt wad and 454 balls in my 1860 Colt replica. its the Sherrifs model with the 5 1/2 inch barrel and its shoots pretty accurate. I use the Same in my 1858 Rem also with 5 1/2 inch barrel. Both Pietta Steel frames.
