Normally I use 5/8x1/2 and I got the numbers mixed up and ordered 1/2W x 5/8L which are longer and skinnier. The traditions hawken woodsman however reacted very well with them! Can't wait to see how well she shoots.
Cool tip. I'm going to give that a whirl. If you have wooden match sticks or leather lacing, gut a piece of leather or match stick the width of the flint. Place the stick or leather under the back edge of the flint near the jaw screw. that angles the forward edge of the flint downward to be more glancing than smashing. I get better life and sparks with my flints with the leather lacing.

No washer on mine, and the frizzen is pretty sloppy on the bolt shank. I was looking for a small washer to put on it.....On my Kentucky the frizzen screw was to tight.
I wonder what would happen if I removed the washer they have on the frizzen and are they all made the same.

Best to use a file and just remove the edge until the spring is weaker. Clamping it will break a tempered spring.I’ve been trying the clamp trick to weaken the spring, not sure how well it worked.
