When I used some 777, I found that it cleaned very easily. I used Pyrodex for years in a cap and ball Kentucky pistol and despite it's claims that it doesn't foul as much and is easier to clean than real BP, I found it to be exactly the opposite. The real black powder didn't foul nearly as much and was much easier to clean. After about two years of using Pyrodex I went back to the real thing.
I actually got 777 to go off in my flintlock rifle, but it wasn't reliable. Never got the Pyrodex to work. If you're going to have to prime the pan with blackpowder, and put a thin layer of BP down the barrel to get the pellets to work, why hassle with pellets and subs? If you have to get real black powder to prime the pan, may as well use it for the load too. By the way, don't ever use 4f for the main load. My 50 cal works great with 3f as both the prime and the load.
