Progress on my Tracks flintlock kit is coming along nicely, but I have a question about inletting... what do you folks use for transfer color for fitting parts?? I have been using axle grease, and/or tracing around the pieces with a sharp knife, but am concerned about leaving residue ( grease )in the wood which finish or stain won't adhere to.
Any suggestions?
By the way, the "Recreating the American Longrifle" book is WELL worth the cost, answered a LOT of questions, and he has some neat ways of doing tricky things..

I use inletting black. You can probably get it from places like Track of the Wolf or Muzzleloader Builder's Supply. Works good, gets all over everything and cleans up nicely.

I use permenant magic markers. You can get them with different size tips depending on the part you are inletting. They make a large tipped one for poster signs that is perfect for doing barrel flats. Smaller ones for small inlays. I have tried the dry erase kind. They work but get more on your hands than anything. Just as messy as inletting black.

Try Prussian Blue. Made by Pera-Tex. You can get it at NAPA.

Works great. And it's cheep

i use inletting black, which i got from track of the wolf and thought was quite pricey, but the stuff lasts forever, (that is to say, a tiny can seems to last a long time) gets on your hands and won't come off, transfers well, and the few times i've managed to smear it on my shirt the stuff washed out OK in the laundry.

for convenience sake, i'd go with the transfer black (inletting black) as opposed to a home made solution.

good luck with your project

Bob.

If you can sneak it out of the bathroom, your wife's lipstick will work in a pinch (don't put it back tho. Somehow they seem to know its been messesd with.)

I first stated using inletting black. But went out and bought an old kerosene lamp and started smoking my parts, but the smoke alarm kept going off, so I switched back to the inletting black. Which I don't like, it gets on everything, and everywhere you want it, and don't want it.I think I'm going back to sooting my parts...hell with the smoke alarm...George F.

I use inletting black that I got from Brownells. They also make it in gold for dark wood.

Yup. That inletting black lasts a Looooooong time.
I've just about used up a little container of it after 12 years. :rotf:

IMO, the best plan if you decide to use lipstick is to go to a drugstore and buy the cheapest, most God awful color you can find.
That way it won't cost a lot and your wife won't be accusing you of Touching Her Things.

zonie :)

I just soot the part with the old standard wax candle. (wife likes the smell of the burnt candle too!)
