I grabbed my 45 caliber "squirrel hawken" this evening and fired about 30 rounds through it.

I tried Hoppe's patch lube for the first time as well. I can report that many gongs were killed cleanly.

Clean up went easier than if I had used spit lube. This particular gun has pretty deep rifling and has been "a bear" to clean in the past. Not so tonight. I am impressed enough to use more Hoppe's in the future.

If I use spit lube for most of my shooting, perhaps using the Hoppe's for the last few shots might ease cleaning. I will be finding out.

Thought I would make a report of my evening and findings.....

Best regards, Skychief. :hatsoff:

PS, I should have mentioned that I was using Schuetzen powder today instead of Goex. I have shot enough of both to remember that each fouls about like the other (unless my memory is failing me). I have used a lot more Goex in the past with this gun though.

Your good report is right on the money...I've also had nothing but excellent results with Hoppes PLUS.
I only use two lubes: NL1000 and Hoppes

Hoppe's works...did you swab between shots?
Sky at the end of your shoot..plug the nipple or touch hole...
fill the barrel to the muzzle with water...while your collecting targets and gear let it soak...this has shortened all my cleaning time in half.
when using Hoppe's I use a wet patch.only draw back is .40 per oz.
Did it group any different ?

Where do you fellas GET this stuff? I can't find anyone who sells it. I've only heard good reports from anybody who has used it, but oddly eough, nobody has let me in on the secret of how to actually procure it!

Hey Dan!

I didn't have to swab between shots.

I have soaked the bore as you describe for years with either water or Windshied Washer Fluid. It sure can help. I have even let bores soak overnight. Great suggestion.

If it grouped any different than my usual spit lubed patch, I couldn't tell. I was shooting gongs instead of paper though. :idunno:

Skychief.

Marc, I happened to find some at a larger Sporting Goods store found only in MI and IN. Other than it, I haven't seen it anywhere.

I sprung for a bottle after reading RoundBall's (and others) glowing reports of the stuff.

Skychief.

PS, Did you enjoy the book I sent ya? :idunno:

Mark, you can just Google Hoppes PLUS BP Solvent & Patch Lube...check for lowest prices, etc.
I've found the best price at Sportsman's Guide...a 10 pack was only $4.xx/bottle.
MidwayUSA also carries it.
(note: sometimes, the word PLUS is on the front of the label, sometimes it's on the back)

I just got 7 bottles @ $4.99 each with free shipping and fast delivery from www.opticsplanet.com

I ordered this steel drum of Hoppes over 2 years ago. IIRC I paid around $40 and shipping. It's a gallon. Just can't remember from whom. :2

Love the stuff! And I swear, it has tightened up my groups since I started using #9. And I also love not having to swab in between shots. Win/win in my book!

When I use Schuetzen powdah I find my BP arms clean up in 1/3rd the patches and time than whilst using Goex ...

I only use Hoppes PLUS when it's dry / low humidity to get moisture in the bore to keep the fouling soft, not have to wipe between shots, etc.
So the way I use it is to simply squeeze a few squirts into a bag of Oxyoke bore-butter prelubed patches to make them wet.

Been using Hoppe's to clean the rifle before leaving the range, makes final cleaning at home very easy.
