Took the .45 rock lock out to try some Graf brand of 3F black powder today, (made by, and the same as Schuetzen) IMMHO, it is on par with the Goex. Accuracy was superb, 10 shots with spit patches and 10 with greased, no swabbing or wiping betwixt shots, and easy loading throughout the strings.

I admit I was a bit leery of the Graf brand, (afraid of, gasp, another Elephant episode) but was most pleasantly surprised, fouling was minimal with easy clean up. It ain't Dupont's holy shiny black, but in today's BP world, it is good enough for this child.

$9.95 a pound, (four pound minimum) $20.00 HAZMAT fee, (up to 50 pounds) and free Fedex shipping to your door from Graf and Sons.

I was asked on another site how I knew the Graf was mfg by Shueltzen? The front label of container reads:

Imported by Schueltzen Powder LLC For Graf & Sons.

Mfg by Wano Schwarzpulver GmbH Kunigunde, Germany

Wano was formerly known a Wasag powder. It's good stuff and quite powerful. I use it in my percussion .50 Renegade and get excellent results.
It does leave a noticably higher amount of fouling than Swiss does, so for smaller calibers or for flinters I'd recommend Swiss for anything more than informal shooting. Wano costs a good third less than Swiss over here in Deutschland.

I have read the old Wano powder did have some fouling problems, but with Schueltzen , they have reformulated and cleaned up their act, resulting in a much better product.

I shot a popund of it about two years back. It may be just a shade hotter than Goex. The fouling is a little worse, but it is soft. I got very good accuracy with it. At a shoot using it, an old time commented that my gun was bleeding. I asked what he ment. There are red flecks in the fouling that make lines on the muzzle as you shoot. The old timer said that was a good thing, and that all the old powders did this. About the time I decided to get more of it, Dennison's stopped carrying it. Now they don't carry any black at all. Being able to order four pounds at a time and get it at a reasonable price is a very good thing.

They say Wano has made some changes in the formulation, I do know I was pleasantly surprised at how little fouling there was after over 20 shots.

I was only loading 50 grains of the Graf 3F in the .45, and it sure had a nice sharp crack & velocity appeared very good.

The old Dupont shiny black bled the same way, and it was a great BP, so the old timer was right.

It is good powder...been using it for awhile now. Was looking at my supply today and thinking of ordering more.

My .50 loves the FFg, but the FFFg plugs up my .36 real quick. I haven't tried Goex yet so have no comparison. :hmm:

I use >Wano PP < since many, many years for my Enfield M 1858 Naval , the Remington M 1863 , my 3 Hawkens and 2 Kentuckys - and I am satisfied with it.
But I will use CH II( Swizerland Poder ) for my Pistols ( several Models ) and that works well too. Both Powders have a good accuracy, not too fast rising pressure and not too much dirt after firing.
Maybe, that > Graf brand< will be coming out on german market too ?
