Kinda general to everyone: I mostly have a strip of patch material and keep an end in my mouth, soaking it with my saliva. when I'm ready for my next shot, I just cut a square and place it on the muzzle under the ball.

Is this unusual? An old-timer showed me this. Is there any reason I shouldn't be doing this?

(I hope this is furthering the topic rather than changing its direction too much.)
 
It was quite by accident, I dumped the charge one time and the measure slipped out of my hand and the thong went over the barrel as I fumbled around getting it back I noticed that it would keep the barrel upright freeing both hands.
