I take it from the posts that shooters are getting pretty fair performance from Triple 7 in side hammer rifles. Has the ignition been consistent with #11 caps?

I used to shoot a lot of Triple Se7en out of sidelocks. In fact I keep a pound of T-7 around for a .54 caliber Mountain Stalker only because with 85 grains of that, a wonder wad and a patched roundball I could not get a better shooting rifle. I have a .50 caliber that will shoot excellent with the stuff, but since it shoots so well with Goex FFFg I use that and save the expensive powder.

I hunted last year in a steady rain with the stuff. I shot two deer that day. I also did a lot of target shooting last winter while it was snowing and never had an ignition problem. Although I could only swab the barrel with pure alcohol in the winter or I was getting a hang fire for some reason. I normally shoot CCI Magnum #11 caps or Remington if all the CCI's are gone.

I like the stuff.

I have seen a little trouble with the Lyman factory nipple, but that's fairly common. Find a good grade nipple and CCI mag cps and never look back..

Gotta add a plug here for Dynamit Nobel 1075 caps here.(the German ones?)
Just got back from a Bear hunt, and comming in Sunday night we got rained on hard! Soaked to the bone! I KNOW I got water down the bore before I could case my .54 prb over t7, I rode shotgun 5 miles on an atv back to camp! The 16 Nobel #11 caps in my pocket on that round leather capper where wet,,.We needed to clean them guns. I pulled that capper out,put one on and that charge went off just fine!

The next day went to a bp shoot and just fer fun I tried'm. Only one of those 14 remaining Nobel failed,, and they where all wet the night before!

I just wondered about others' experiences. I was testing a Cabela's Kodiak for Africa and simply could not get reliable ignition from RS. I wanted to use it for backup and for dangerous game but ignition dependability was so poor that I didn't know if I could trust it. The only thing the gun would shoot consistently was FFg. I switched out the nipples to musket cap then tried some Triple 7 with very good results but I did not try Triple 7 with #11 nipples. Perhaps I should have. After I went to musket cap nipples I was even getting excellent performance from Triple 7 pellets in that rifle. The only criticism I have of Triple 7 in sidehammers is that it seems more explosive? if that is the term. Recoil is sharper, more like smokeless, and it seems harder on equipment. I prefer the slower ignition phase of FFg or RS but T-7 is good stuff.

Back to Africa hey? Lucky fella!
Over my Oheler the T-7 gives about 10% greater velocity than Goex or Elephant.
It's MUCH faster than Pyro-swoosh is supposed to be 20% stronger than black or pyro. Where those figures come from I have no idea.
The stuff is gooooooooood. If I couldn't get black I'd use T-7 exclusivley.
Ignition is as right now as black.
Dangerouse game hey?
What?
What weapon?
In-line? It's o.k., inquiring minds ya know.
If I get to go in the next 2 years it'll probably be with my fast twist .45 percussion and a stout charge of gee-whiz under a 500 grain bullet.
If I sold all the manure I don't use anymore I could go next year.

This thread should be moved to the "Shooting Accessories" forum.

I went from 100 grains Pyro RS to 80 grains 777 FFg and the GPR puts the .530 balls in the exact same ragged hole at 50 yards. Ignition was faster than P-dex with Remington #11's. Plus, no scrubbing! 3 wet patches, 4 dry ones, wipe 'er down and it was clean. Awesome stuff. :results:

The best caps I've seen so far are the RWS #11, them things would catch water on fire :imo:

777 shoots great in my cap guns. It will not shoot at all in my flinter. Had to go to Goex to get it to shoot. But at $25 a pound for 777 I will be shooting Goex in all my guns.
Old Charlie

Boy, I hear you there. I pretty much stick to Goex for my side hammers. It's hard to get around here so I often mix 50/50 old RS and FFg to extend the black powder, use up the RS and still have reliable #11 ignition. Works OK in Shotguns and short range hunters.
