My Son and I are new to Muzzleloading, but we love it. As we were buying our rifles, the clerk at Gander Mountain suggested we use Triple Seven pellets. We bought CVA magnum rated rifles which said we could load to 150 grains, but the Triple Seven said to load NO more than 100 - no matter what the rifle says. We sighted in & hunted with 100 grains and took a couple deer no problem with complete pass thrus on the shots. Question: why does Triple Seven say not to load with more than 100 grains? Is their powder more powerful than standard BP or Pyrodex? Are they simply worried about liability if a guns blows up? A buddy of mine says to use 150 anyway as the higher velocity will provide better results, but I'm hesitant to go against the companys recommendation.

T7 is hotter than Goex by a fair margin. Recoil under heavy bullets gets rude very quickly, and the power is not needed for deer. I am using 70 grains of black under a roundball. Welcome to the muzzleloading world! A lot of new comers to the muzzleloading world think that large powder charges and fast bullets are the answer in scoped guns that resemble the modern guns they are used to using.
Muzzleloading with traditional equipment is a different game than that. If you need more power in my world, you need a bigger barrel and a bigger ball.
This board is pretty much dedicated to the traditional equipment. Discussing both types was starting more problems than it was worth. There are other boards out there that have modern sections where your guestions like this will get a much better response. Most of the folks here use real black powder pretty much exclusively. This is a great place, but the modern guns are not covered.

Try this site. They have modern and traditional as well as other gun related categories. This link is to the Modern muzzle loader.

Dont know which Cva your useing, WE most of us have turnned our backs on CVA since they dont make sidelocks anymore, just those inli... things as far as 777 I use it in my 45 cal 48" H+A target bench rifle, after 100 (this is powder not a pellet ) your just building up bunchs of breech preesure, 150 grs well ita not going to get much faster at all and if your bullet has enough wt youll find out what the blow up point is. Fred :hatsoff:

Welcome to the site and I hope you stick around it is a great place.

I shoot both modern and old sidelocks guns. This is the best place on the web to learn about traditional shooting.

This site doesn't talk inline shooting but the general knowledge you collect here is outstanding for any rifle that you own. That being said follow your manual because different powders perform different in various rifles.

Hodgdon limits even Pyrodex to 100g. Their thinking I guess is that is all you need to kill about anything on earth. Or maybe lawsuits.

CVA inlines are not proofed for 3 pellets. Even 2 may be pushing it. I used 80 grains of 3F Goex when I had one. It was a nail driver.
