being self employeed is not always fun. Money has been real tight lately ,and today i decided to go though my guns and see what might be able to go down the road for some needed cash. Found an old double barrel in the closet i had forgotten. Dont know why, buy i would swear it was an old double with ears. when i pulled it out, first thing i noticed was the nipples staring right at me and no mechanism to break open the gun. After looking her over again, the wood is actually in pretty solid shape, although it could be refinished. it is missing one of the two wedges on the forearm. the barrels looking pretty clean and are not terrible either for its age. Most of the ornate metal and trigger guard and triggers seem sound. biggest problem is that neither lock assembly is on the gun and knowing the folks i got it from they are long lost. I cannot find any identifying markers on it anywhere.

any ideas on how to find out what i have. and if it might be worth my time to find the locks or am i just looking at a wall hanger or parts for someone else?

cant send pics today, but maybe tommorrow.

thanks,

I'd say that the odds of finding a pair of locks that actually fit the gun - providing it is an old gun - are just about zero. If the barrels and mounts are nice they might be of interest to someone who wants to build a gun. Of course, its hard to make any judgement without seeing it so perhaps I'm wrong but in someting like 40 years of collecting I've nearly never found a loose lock that actually fit a mortice...much less a pair of them.

Look at the underside of the barrel for proof marks. An oval with "LEG" in it is Belgian and while these were often fairly well made there were thousands of them and they aren't particularly valuable. A pair of crossed scepters is probably Birmingham (England) which is slightly better but condition is still paramount.

Do you have any pictures of the gun and a price for it as is? What is the guage and barrel length? Any markings on top of the barrel or underneath it?

guys, i will try to get it back out sometime tonight and take a much better detailed look at it, maybe even with a Mag glass. I dont currently have a smoothbore, and think it would be great to have a double at that, but also have come to the realization that my chances for finding what i need maybe slim.

hopefully more details, very soon. dont have a digital camera or would already have the pics on here.

thanks ,

You "may" look to L&R for a pair of locks that can be fitted. It make take some welding of the plate to get it right, but with a little studying I bet it can be done. That is, if the rest of the gun is good and worth it.

thanks for the continued feedback. havent had much of a chance to get the old girl back out again. I would be tickled to be able to get her live again. Who is this L & R? I dont recall this name. any help is appreciated.

OU can find links to the suppliers under member resources at the top of the Index page. Here is the link to L&R.

This is a lock company that has been around for more than 30 years.
