Well, evening two was clear, warm, and less wind. I saw 12 birds on the way to my spot with 3 nice toms in the bunch. Got to the property i am hunting and there were 2 hens in the field. I went on out to my Oak tree, set up my decoy, and got in place. About 20 minutes later i saw a bird up the hill behind me. I called a few times, Thank you Hoyt for the advise, and he started coming down. I thought he would come to the decoy which i set out to my left since i am right handed. Instead he made a bee line for the tree i was under. He came in right behind the tree and i lost sight of him. He made a little noise and i knew he was on my off side. I knew i couldn't turn all the way around, so i moved the smoothbopre around to shoot left handed. He must have seen or heard me because he took off running. He had been within 15-20 feet of me. When i turned around and saw him again he was about at the extent of my range limit. I wasn't comfortable taking a left handed shot, so let him walk. He was only a jake, but he would have been my first flinter game. But i didn't want to take a chance on just wounding him, so i let him go. Later, just before dark i saw 3 nice toms and some hens in a field. I set up and waited since they were heading my way. They finally came within range and i fired at the head of one of the toms. I was using 80 grs of Dragon 2f powder, an overpowder wad, half a lubed fiber cushion wad, paper shot cup, 1 1/2 oz of #5 shot, and an overshot card. I don't know if the shot cup did the slug thing again, but i never so so much as a feather come off him. He took off flying and was flying good and strong and flew a long ways. I hope that i completely missed him. No more paper shot cups for me. I am not taking another chance with them. Ohh well, i had some birds answer my call, and one actually come in to it, so i guess i am getting better at it. Maybe next time out.

It sounds like you are definitely getting closer! Good call on not shooting too far at the jake - sometimes it's hard to think clearly when the adreneline is pumping so you did great there. Sorry to hear about the miss, but at least you missed him clean. As for the paper shot cups, I tried patterning with them and I was very inconsistent. For that reason, I don't use them at all now, either.

You should have definitely gained some confidence in your calling - heck, you called one right to you! :applause: It's just a matter of time now, until deep fried wild turkey is on your menu. :hatsoff:

I always thought first thing in the morning was supposed to be the best time to turkey hunt...seems like you're going late in the afternoons and are covered up with them :hmm:

I have been going about 5 or 6 in the evening because that is when the property owner asked me to come out. Doesn't seem to matter, at least not where i am. I went early morning last season for a few days and didn't get a thing, then he told me to come out in the evening and i got one the second night. I may be getting them on there way back to roost?

Sounds like what's happening..getting them on the flip side...anyway the gobblers around here will leave the roost...breed what hens come to them right after daylight and travel around during the day tagging along with what hens don't sneak off from them and doing their thing and come back to the same general area to roost during the afternoon.
It's just a lot more gobbling and activity right at daylight..unless they are roosted right with hens.
Good luck.
