We still had some snow left over from Saturday’s storm so I went up on the mountain to do some shooting because snow plus flintlock equals fun! Experimented with a couple different wads and some new paper shot cartridges. The gun was a .62 caliber Fusil de Chasse. Distance was 25 yards for all shots. Powder was 60 grains of Goex 2f (and prime) for all shots. Paper cartridges were made with 70 grains of #6 shot. Flint was homemade.
Turkey target number one shows load of powder, jute tow wad, paper cartridge. It would have taken a turkey but not the best pattern.
Turkey target two was powder, brown paper wad, 70 grains of loose #6 shot and jute tow wad..
Turkey target 3 is powder, brown paper wad, paper cartridge. Looking better.
Target 4 was 3 shots with white marbles. Load was powder, brown paper wad, 1/2 inch white marble and jute tow wad. Spread was 2 and 1/2 inches.
The brown paper wad over the powder gave the best results no matter if was paper cartridges or loose shot.
I shot about 45 shots total. At about the 30 shot mark the flint stopped sparking good. Cleaned it, put new edge on it and was good to go for the rest of the session.
And here’s the paper cartridge.
Powder horn.
Shot horn.
Homemade flint.
