Well, i finally made up my mind to get a turkey tag and go turkey hunting. I have never tried it before, so it will be a new expeience for me. I am leaving early in the morning for a place i got permission to hunt today. Will be using my Navy Arms double barrel .12 ga. caplock with cylinder bore barrels. I am going to be using 95grs of RS powder and 1 3/8 oz of #5 shot. I will be trying to call with some homemade bamboo calls i made last week, and a homemade slate call from a piece of slate i brought from the farm where i lived before we moved here. Should be a fun day.

Good luck...remember, they see color, have the best eyesight imaginable, and are very wary.

The old saying goes like this:

A deer creeps through the forest, sees a camo clad hunter, and thinks it's a stump;
A turkey creeps through the forest, sees a stump, and thinks it's a camo clad hunter!

DON'T MOVE.

Just remember, in the part of the country you live in, a Sasquatch with a feather duster is NOT a turkey! :what:

Well, no turkey this morning, although there were plenty of them around. I pulled in the driveway in front of the house i had gotten permission to hunt at this morning and there were 13 turkeys there in the yard, 3 of which were nice sized Toms. They stood there as i got out of the van. I didn't want to shoot one in the guys front yard though, especially when i didn't know if he was out of bed yet. About then he came out the door and saw them and asked if there were any Toms in the bunch. I said there were 3. He said to try to sneak back around his workshop and see if i could get a shot at them if they came by that way. Needless to say, they had already seen me, and headed off away from me. Not knowing any better i tried to stalk them. Turkeys don't stalk well. :: I got within about 30 yds of them, but they were bunched up and i didn't want to take a chance on hitting a hen. By the time a Tom seperated from the hens, they were out about 40 yds. and i didn't feel confident i could make a clean kill at that range. After that i set up under a big Oak tree and called with one of my homemade bamboo calls. I had a gobbler down in a draw gobbling back at me, but he wouldn't come in. So back out tomorrow, this time earlier, so i get there and get set up before daylight, unless it is raining. Ohh well, i got my adrenalin going anyway, even if i didn't get a shot.

For what its worth when I was 17 and IN shape I couldn't run down turkeys and I tried a number of times.

Learned something today. A 52 year old, out of shape, old man, can't outrun a flock of turkeys.

How about this wild turkey?

Even when i was YOUNG, i couldn't outrun that Wild Turkey. At least not the after affects. :: Although actually, i never drank Wild Turkey, mostly Jack Daniels.

I don't think that Jack Daniels makes a rye whiskey. I do like a touch of rye now and then. Makes a pretty good mint julep

Stay at it Rebel - even tom turkeys make mistakes eventually! Good luck.

I assume it is illegal to shoot hens?

If you have a choice of toms, I just read in a leading outdoor magazine that you should target the younger male, he'll have the least amount of experience and cunningness needed to avoid your wrath...

So Rebel, what is your plans for that turkey's beard?

Sure could use it to support my other habit, fly tying...

Thanks for posting the pic. Need any small feathers for fly tying. I used to tye flies, but haven't in years. I have a real nice fly tying kit with an OLD Herters vise that i have been thinking about trying to sell since id don't use it any more. I should, especially now that we are right near the Umpqua River with some good Trout, Salmon and Steelhead fishing. But doubt i will.

Have plenty of turkey tail and wing feathers, need beards for nymph patterns though...

Hunting and fly tying go together, this way you utilize the maximum amount of the animal you harvested...

I am also fresh out of squirrel whiskers...
