TVM Early Lancaster - first firing

I took my new TVM flinter to the range today - for the first time. It's .50 cal, 42" bbl. The load I used was: .490" round balls, 40 gr of 3f powder, and 4f in the pan. I shot from a bench at 25 yds to get aquainted with the gun. There were no misfires and the shots were dead on. There was essentially no discernable delay between the pan and the main charge. Sweet.

Well, there must have been a few microseconds delay - but way too short a delay to cause a flinch (even by me). After the gun fired, I would ask myself, maybe I heard a tiny delay?

I have a flint pistol that has a sufficient delay to cause a flinch. I've replaced the touch-hole liner with an improved liner, and will be trying it again shortly. If that doesn't cure it, I might try pouring a dab of 4f into the muzzle, with 3f on top. Or drill out the liner a slight amount.

Thanks for the range report. I've got a Late Lancaster coming is a few weeks and this kind of report helps with my obsession... er uh ... expectations. :grin:

Surely there must be SOMETHING wrong with it that you can tinker on ! Perfect is so boring. Maybe test it to see if the grouping is better with your mouth open or closed - paint the front sight with camo vs black - loosen the butt plate screws and re-tighten to seat them in properly.

I think one of the first things he's got to do is accidently bang it up against something(loading bench or treestand) and put a small to medium dent in the stock! :blah: :rotf: give it some personality!.

Aaarrgh! I always do that to every gun I get, within a month. Best thing to do is go ahead and bang it a couple times cause they're gonna get there anyway and this way you'll already have it done. :v

I have a TVM Early Lancaster .54 36" barrel. Is my go to rifle. Good luck you will love your new rifle.

r11: My 42" bbl is great for shooting. But I almost need scaffolding and a high-bay building to clean it.

Just be aware that the burst of air escaping down through the powder charge when the PRB is seated can easily blow the fine 4F right out through the vent...either block the vent or seat the PRB very slowly, etc;

Or drill out the liner a slight amount.

If it was me, that's what I'd look for...my liners have .070" openings (#50 drill) and always give outstanding ignition with Goex 4F prime.

Deriner, I also have a rifle with a.44 inch barrel great shooter but a bit long in the woods. I had my TVM built with a 36" barel to make it a short hunting rifle. Had problems with the long one in shooting house. :cursing: I tryed to set up on a buck and the rifle hit every thing in shooting house.

My favorite rifle for several years has been a .45 Lancaster with a 36" barrel. It handles like a dream. Since then I've compromised and everything since has had 38" barrels.
