Friends, our 2nd Amendment rights are always under attack and the NRA has been a constant for decades in helping fight that fight.
We have partnered with the NRA to offer you a discount on membership and Muzzleloading Forum gets a small percentage too of each membership, so you are supporting both the NRA and us.
O yea here's the story if it needs to be move to the hunting section please move it....
So I've been watching this area for weeks and have seen birds in it often. So the other day I eased up to the field and there was about 20 birds out feeding and one big tom.. the field is cut in half by a very very thick fence row.. so thick you cannot see through it so I circled around and got with in 15 yards of that tom... in the middle of the fence row is a break so I set up 15 yards from that break and start a very soft series of yelps and he started gobbling like crazy.. well after 30 mins the birds started feeding away so I circled back to another ambush spot and waited when the hens showed up without the tom I circled back around to get the stuff I had left and that dam bird was 15 yards from the first stop I left... anyway I had a small hill between him and me so I low crawled up and got within 40 yards which we all know is to far.. so I waited until he went back to the hens through that cut and I rushed up to the cut and he was standing a what I thought was 25 yards or so... I let him have it and he ran off like nothing ever happen... 25 yards turn out to be about 35 yards.. anyway he went into another field gathered up with the hens and went along his way... my load was 70 grains of 3f and same shot in volume.... think I need to work that load some hahahahah o it was 7 1/2's size shot
SO IMHO 7 1/2 shot is too small for turkey I use #6 #5 or #4. and 35 yards is a stretch for a cylinder bore gun.
Additionally, equal powder to shot usually produces a donut pattern (for me) which is no good for stationary (standing Turkey) targets. I do ok on dove and quail with the equal ratio loads but I am swinging on them moving targets so I think I am hitting them with the edges of the pattern.
I Highly recommend the skychief special load I mentioned before it really gives a nice tight, uniform pattern! The proof is in the pudding!!
This was with my old fowler from a few years ago, but my new fowler likes it just as well!! I'm hoping to get a chance in Oregon in a few weeks!
