0.600 balls and 0.010 lubed patches.

And never go to the range without a screw and worm to pull stuck loads, ask me how I know

Tear the folded end, pour in the powder, flip it around and thumb start the beeswax dipped ball, tear off the extra paper and ram it down.

If you're "authentic" you prime with it before loading . . . and that is fast but pretty unsafe.

I carry a little priming horn.

Congrats on the new gun! Could you post a picture along with the video? What lock did you get?

For a PRB load I use 80gr 2F, a lubed cushion wad and a .010 lubed patch with a .600 ball. Right now I use "Bore Butter" but I want to try a home recipe sometime. :v

I have tried that same load with the 20 gauge cushion wads from TOTW, over powder AND over the ball.

For me either one seems to blow open the groups.

Unfortunate,as a 0.600 ball with a 0.010 lubed patch rams down so easily in a clean bore I'd prefer a wad over the ball to hold it in place, especially if I were carrying this load for hunting.

I actually use a 1/2" cushion wad and split it half and put Bore Butter on it. I think this helps with any possible blow by and keeps the patch intacked. Many don't use a patch at all and use a wad over the top to hold the ball in place as Birdwatched said. Try different loads and see what works for you. Have fun.

Loading bare balls between wads sure seems simpler and easier. A problem I have with pre-cut patches and these heavy, large caliber balls in my smoothbore is that it is real easy to get the lubed patch off-center when loading.

TOTW also sells 0.61 cal balls, I'm gonna give those a try.

I had the same problem not only with large cal, but also very small. Add gloves or cold or excitement, and balls and patches start to spray around you.

Cutting patches at the muzzle solved that entirely. Dead easy, and an excuse to carry a neat knife.

Ah so....

I suppose I should add "patch knife" to the thirty odd odds and ends I usually haul to the range already. I have learned that shooting a flinter is like fishing; ya gotta slow down, be patient.... and bring a whole tackle box of "stuff"

But I dont have nearly the pre-cut patch problem when shooting my .53 cal Plains rifle, seems like the rifling holds the patch centered better.

Not really a problem as long as the patch touches the ball on the sides. Another way of saying that is an oversize patch will do just fine and not adversly affect accuracy.

C'mon now, you don't think that little video clip is gonna hold us up for long do you? Lets go, we want pics, and maybe another video. Good luck with your new fowler.

I'll get some pics soon as I get a chance. 27th wedding Anniversary today, I better take care of that first

Sound wisdom. :slap:

Hey! That reminds me, my 27th is next week. Thanks for that reminder. :hatsoff:

Opps, mentioned to the little lady I was ready to go, when she reminded me it's our 28th, not 27th. Any one know how to get rid of the taste of toe jam from foot in mouth?

"Sweetie, my love for you is so fresh it seems like only a few years have passed. How can it possibly be 28 years when you only look 36 years old in my eyes?"

Now get back in there and suck up!
I'm using that one next year

Ignition with that gun is always super fast, in my experience. I cast WW smoothbore ball so they end up around .605 and resist patching even with thin material. That bare ball on top of a lubed 1/2" cushion wad seems to be consistent at 50 yards at around 5" to 6" for a 15 to 20 shot group I fired. I like your gun.
