Brubincam,
First, it is arguable whether the milled channel does weaken the stock significantly. However, I believe that bedding this area correctly can turn that weakness into strength. The barrel does support the area, but does a lot better with the accraglass supporting. I would not simply glue wood into the area when I could accraglass it. I did have a non milled and non bedded rifle crack through the lock mortice.
I recognize that this is not a period correct production method. There is nothing that I admire more than a totally hand made rifle without any compromise in the method of construction. However, a Colonial Williamsburg rifle is well beyond my means. Therefore, I have to compromise on some production methods to be able to afford a usable gun or abandon any possibility of owning some period styled long guns.
I have made the choice to use currently produced barrels and to glass bed them into stocks for cost, accuracy, safety and strength. These are areas where I have chosen to compromise for good reason.
Nothing particular against a drilled ramrod channel. I have Pecatonica River/ToTW, TVM Garner, TVM Avance and Jackie Brown guns. As Zonie stated, the PR Tennessee Classic was not milled. I bedded this gun and am quite happy with it. It also cost a bit more than the others.
I am not getting a kick back to recommend any method. (Although, I am available should anyone care to make an offer :rotf
I am just providing this info so the reader can make an informed choice. I also suggest that people make consider bedding and filling with glass if they purchase a milled ramrod hole.
