Hey folks. I've been looking at a TVM Poor Boy flinter in either 32 cal. or 36 cal. (can't remember which now). I'm a bit green when it comes to TVM and so any and all info as to quality, price etc would be appreciated. I have a Lyman GPR in 50 cal. and am thinking small game with the TVM. Anyone else out there make a decent small cal flinter? Thanks.

Which TVM are you wanting to deal with??? Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading, or Tennessee Valley Manufacturing. Both have website.

Try looking at, and calling toni and matt at TV Muzzleloading. They have a fine reputation.
www.avsia.com/tvm/

The cost will depend on what you order, and whether you want the gun completely finished by them, or if you prefer to finish the stock, metal finishing, etc. The gun can be made to your personal dimensions, so you may want to do some measuring of your other guns to determine what fits you best for Length of Pull, Pitch, Drop at Heel, and Drop at Comb. Since balance is very important on any gun to be shot off-hand, you might want to think about the length of barrel, and whether you want it straight, Straight tapered, or Swamped, before calling.

Right now, on the TVMuzzleloading site is a Kentucky Poorboy in Flintlock and .45cal on sale for $799.00 It is one of 2 ready made guns in their Christmas Special area.

Well, you boys got me on the TVM thing. I'm not real sure what I was holding now. Just that it was in the $900 range and sweet. Plain stock w/brass butt plate. Jim said it was a factory gun and not put together by a kit. Guess I need to go back to Fort Chambers and do a redo but careful this time. If I spring for one it'll be either a 32 cal. or 36 cal. to be used as a squirrel rifle. thanks for the input.

Either way, if the gun hasn't been abused and is in good shape, it should make a fine squirrel rifle. I have a Southern .32 Tennessee Valley Manufacturing and it works great for Tree Rats.

Here is my TVM po boy in 45 cal.
All my "custom" rifles are by Matt and Toni and I love every one.
Not to mention Toni is the sweetest woman in the world to talk to over the phone, real southern hospitality.

Man I just checked out that rifle, I would jump on that son of a gun.

Just made a phone call and found out it is a new TV Muzzleloading rifle, flint, "Poor Boy" 32 cal. @ $940. It is sweet but I may hold out for a 36 cal as turkey may be in play here. Please convince me that a 32 Cal. is adequate for both squirrel and turkey and such.

Go for a .40...

While a .32 will do what you ask, I'd also go for a .40 given the choice. It'll do squirrels to deer (where legal).

I would go for the .40 Cal the .32s are great but can be a pain. I would make sure that I bought a "swamped" barrel. The small calibers in straight walls are muzzle heavy and just don't have the feel. :)

Gentlemen; tell me about the 40 cal please. Load data (where I can find it), ball weight etc. The 40's a new one for this greenhorn.

The loads I use are for shooting matches. I shoot 25 grs. of 3f at 25 yds and 40 grs at 50 yds. You can shoot 60 grs at 100 yds. I shoot a .40 TVM SMR with a straight wall barrel {Big Mistake} will replace it with a swamped barrel. I use a .015 walmart pillow tick, Hoppe's BP+ and a .395 swaged ball. It's a flinter of course small Siler and Davis DSTs.

If you go with a custom look at a Rice Round bottom barrel swamped and a Chambers lock. Just some thoughts. For coyotes you can try working up to 70 grs. a real killer at 100 yds.

Old Douglas 7/8" X 42" barrel in a full stock So Mtn rifle. I like the weight.

Load is .395 ball, .015 patch, 50 gr FFg for up to 50 yard matches and 75 gr FFg for 100 yd targets and hunting. Shoot same sight picture as higher velocity prints 100 yard shot to center.

I think Pennsylvania restricted small game, including turkey, to 40cal and smaller in recent years. 44cal and larger is required for deer, and the late deer season is flintlock only.

Hey Greemtnboy,
Too bad that scatter gun of yours couldn't shoot a better group!
Up here in Canada, that's a fair to middle'n group for a smooth bore .
That is a smooth rifle, ain't it? :v
Old Ford

You're right excess; just checked "The Book" and here in PA it's 40 cal. and smaller for small game. Thanks for the heads up. Was actually starting to think 45 cal.

I would go with a 36 or 40 cal, you will be happier being able to use a larger diameter field rod.
I would say go with a green mtn barrel, all mine shoot MOA, second choice would be a rice barrel.
You want deep grooves in you barrel so you can use a thick patch enabling you to heat your load up if you want.
