I had a little forge time this weekend and created these twin (fraternal not identical) war hawks. I forged these punched eye hawks from a 3/4" piece of 1095 round stock. The handles are from figured maple colored with aqua fortis. I remain your humble servant.....

That is how I understand it. I based these hawks off of an original I saw in a museum. They are too light to be an effective tool, but are quick and light. Others may disagree.....

The one I saw was collected in the 1850's - can't speak for east coast colonial period.
