Twist rate on TC Big Boar

The TC Big Boar .58 is fairly new to me & I was wondering about twist rates in it. Read an old post here where someone said the 4 digit ser. # barrels were 1-66, all others were 1-48.
I measured mine, rechecking 5-6 times. Looks more like 1-52.
The gun has a 4 digit ser#. Allowing for some error in my measurement would this most likely be 1-48 ?
I would be interested to hear from anyone who shoots this gun as far as PRB accuracy.

1 in 48 is correct. T/C's 1 in 66 twist roundball barrels all came from their custom shop Fox Ridge Outfitters and have a banner mark on the side with "Roundball Twist 1-66" inside the banner.

Yeah. I have one that's 4-digit, and I don't recall the # on the other, though it's higher and later. Both are 1:48.

The big difference is that the later one has the "dreaded" recessed muzzle that some folks love to hate. Don't recall the name, perhaps because it doesn't make a whit of difference to me. They're equally accurate, and that means they're both very accurate. No loading hassles either.

I have a Big Boar barrel that is 1:48. Out to 75 yards (which is as far as I will likely shoot at live game with my eyes and iron sights)I get just under 3" groups using 110 grains of 2f.

Wanna have some real fun, try putting 30-35 grains of 3f behind your PRB and thump some bunny heads. No change of sights required with a 75 yard sight in. It will be very close to right on at 25 yards with that light load. And "groups" are mostly ragged holes.

They came right from the factory in 58 caliber and labeled Big Boar.

That would be a real blast, but unfortunately here in CT we aren't allowed to use any BP caliber larger than .36 with prb for small game unless you are hunting on private property which is reeeeal difficult to get permission to hunt on. People here are paranoid about guns, especially after Sandy Hook.

Thompson Center made a lot of their barrels with something they called a QLA which was an abbreviation for "Quick Load Accurizor".

It basically involved boring the muzzle of the bore oversize so the shooter could stick a elongated bullet into it and it would automatically line it up with the bore.

A lot of people who shoot patched roundballs did not like it because even with a patch around the ball, it didn't hold the ball very firmly while they were reaching for their ramrod.

Others thought the oversize QLA caused a patched roundball to not shoot as accurately as a normal muzzle.

I never owned a rifle with a QLA on it so I can't say if they were right or wrong.

I have a .50 caliber 1:66 round ball barrel from Fox Ridge Outfitters (T/C's custom shop) for my Renegade with the QLA. I have never had a problem loading patched round balls, and especially like the fact that I don't have to use a short starter. My accuracy is on par with my other .50's.

Great post. Is that your target range load too? I shoot indoor at a range and 25 meters and I'm still fussing with patch thickness, ball diameter, patch lube etc. to get that "ragged hole".

Any suggestions on wheres the rabbits? Thanks! BB! Glen

It's a fine load for 25 yards. If I was shooting 50 I'd probably up it to around 60 grains, give or take. I've found that ticking patches and .570 balls are great in both of mine, but at their best with a grease-type lube. I've settled on TOW's mink oil tallow for ease of use and "texture" over a wide range of ambient temps. I once used deer tallow with olive oil, but had to vary the proportions from winter to summer. The mink oil tallow doesn't seem to care if it's hot or cold outside.
