I have been contemplating the construction of a hammer fired in-line muzzleloading pistol. I was wondering what type of metal would be good to make a frame. It would have to be heavy enough to withstand heavy loads.

Without seeing the design, I'm just guessing, but in most cases, the frame doesn't have to withstand any great pressures. If a steel barrel with a threaded steel breech plug in it are mounted to the frame, wood has worked for centuries.

If the design puts a heavy load thru the frame, like a Cap and Ball gun does, I would suggest using a mild steel, but remember, this is just a guess. :)
