Uberti 1849 Colt

I am thinking about a Christmas present to myself, a Colt 1849 revolver. I already have 3 44’s and 2 36’s so maybe a 31cal would fill the gap. Does anyone have any good or bad opinions about this revolver?

I hate to point out that you do not have a gap, you have a void. 31 Cal being below 36 and not between 36 and 44.

Just saying. I hate that phase!

I have that "void" myself. Got some Dragoons and the Baby Dragoon is missing.

The one I got last year from midway was the worst nib experience I have had yet out of 6 pistols.
Took a lot of frustration and filing and a couple new parts but it now runs fine.
Likes slixshots,cci#11 magnum and a .33 projectile.
Eras gone mold for conicals and a Lee 00 buckshot mold for roundball.

The 1849 is a cute little shooter. Sam Colts best seller as I recall. I bought one years ago from Gander Mountain as they were having a sale. It was a Uberti. Nicely fitted and finished but the darn thing would not shoot. Close inspection revealed a pimple in the frame opposite the arbor and under the hammer which prevented the hammer from striking the cap. A bit of surgery with a Dremel grinder solved the problem. Whereupon I discovered that it shot about 8" high. But it was cute and could be loaded with buck shot as an alternative to cast balls.

I have 6 Uberti revolvers and even though they look great, some have there issues. I am just trying to resist a impulse buy, but when it comes to buying a new Colt replica revolver, I am weak.

Uberti Quality Control seems to be a hit or miss proposition some times. You pays your money...and you takes your chances.

Ya know, every issue I had with Uberti revolvers, Midway worked with me 100% to resolve the issue. I am again willing to take that chance.

Little revolvers often have big problems. My Uberti 1849 was a nightmare from the factory, it cap jammed every shot. I replaced the factory nipples, and that helped some. Still, never could fire a full cylinder with a cap jam. Finally replaced the mainspring with one out of a 1851 Navy, it fit fine after a little filing/grinding. Now, it is about as reliable as any of my other Colt repros. Still, for the price they sell for nowadays, you should not have to fiddle with them, or add aftermarket parts. Mine uses a .330 round ball, per factory literature. Shoots a decent group, albeit 10"-12" high at 10 yards.

They tend to multiply. I picked up a used one from this forum. It's a lot of fun. Dooo it!

Go for it! They are nice, fun revolvers. While you’re at it go ahead and buy a second hammer spring (your gonna need it) . I cut the second spring to 2/3 the length of the original spring and put it underneath the full length spring doubled up, that and slixshot nipples cleared up the cap-jams

My 1849 Colt showed up today, really fast shipping for this holiday season. I removed a small burr on the hand and bolt. Fit and finish looks good to me, even the Uberti box was in great shape. Midway came through again and at a good price.

I am really glad that I got mine. It really is a sweet little revolver.
