Make the body of the tab about 3/4" wide, and the strap itself 1/4" wide and you should be good.

Here is another idea for a thong that I have seen (but never tried):

Use a leather shoe lace (shown in red in the sketch below). Tie a knot on the hammer end to make a tab. Thread the lace through the two holes in the holster body, and then back out again. Adjust to length, tie a knot, then trim off the excess.
