Up until couple years ago we had Check Stations. And I know one person that worked them told me they would let Local Poachers slide because this is a Poor part of the State and they need the Meat. So I'm thinking why have Laws?

I hear ya.Up until last year we had to stop to the closest Check stations and register your kill. Now they changed the law and gave us the option of driving home and Registering your kill online.Once home I wonder how many Deer actually get registered. It's seems like many government agencies are experiencing cutbacks in funding or their workers just don't care anymore.

I don't think the check stations really make much difference. It's just as easy to not drive to the check station as to not register by phone or on-line.The check station was handy because they had a good scale and they would tell you your deers age. It was also kinda fun to walk around and see what everybody else got.

Well, the wildlife departments take that into account and have it pretty well covered.
We have 24hrs to register a kill...BUT...we first have to "notch" out a certain area on our license "at the site of the kill"...not out at the road, not home in our driveway, etc.

THEN we have 24hrs to register it and write in the registration # next to the notch we cut out.

If somebody tries to play games, and not record a #, thinking they just got a freebie, there is a very stffl fine if you are stopped for any reason and it's then discovered you have a notch cut out in your license but don't have a registration # recorded with it.

So I cut the notch before I start dragging the deer (as required), get to the truck where the 800# is on my cell phone speed-dial to call the registration system, the system gives me my registration # and I write it in before I ever start the engine.

This is the 2nd year in IL for the phone/internet registrations. The first year for the notched tag.
We get a peel-off sticky tag in 2 parts. You slit the hind leg between the tendon and leg, then wrap the notched leg tag around the tendon, thru the slit, and stick it to itself. Almost impossible to unstick without tearing. It stays with the meat until it is processed and put away.
The other half of the tag goes around the antlers of a buck and stays until you get it back from the taxidermist if you take him to one.
There are boxes to write in the confirmation numbers on both halfs.

When I was a kid, there weren't any check stations, you just mailed in yore tag. Course we wuz only allowed one deer a year back then. Couldn't register 'em on the internet in pre-hysteric times. :rotf:

I tell you what I shot a Deer couple years ago that ran and died 10 yards from the house.Got a Big Barn.It would have been so easy. :nono: But I put my Tag on just the same.Heck their only $7

I'll bet you 90% forget about notching out the tag, though. I forgot during first season. :nono: We were supposed to do it last year, too.
We have until 10 pm to call or log in.
I always enjoyed seeing what came in , at the check station. They always had free samples from the locker, too.

OOOPS! I never notched mine last year. I am a criminal. :nono:
I thought that was a new rule.

A game warden gave a guy a ticket that forgot to notch his license where I was hunting this season. I like the phone check, but miss the check station. Sometimes I still go and check them in at the station just to see what others have checked in.
