Last weekend I took two days of hearth cooking at Conner Prairie. The class preceded John Schipper's engraving class that was part of the Arms Making Workshop. Anyway, our instructor, Gretchen, who is an interpreter at the Village, also told us a useful purpose for earwax - Chapped lips.
She told us it was in the The American Frugal Housewife by Mrs. Child. Sure enough, it's there on page 116. It reads, "Nothing is better than ear-wax to prevent the painful effects resulting from a wound by a nail, skewer, &c. It should be put on as soon as possible. Those who are troubled with cracked lips have found this remedy successful when others have failed. It is one of those sorts of cures, which are very likely to be laughed at; but I know of it having produced very beneficial results."
