Value of a TC Hawkin?

Stopped by a pawn shop today, noticed a good looking Hawkin with a rough bore. They tagged it at $165. I'm thinking $100 due to the condition of the barrel.
What are your thoughts?

Okay, you buy it, it has a rough bore, then how do you repair the rough bore and at what cost?

That would depend on how rough the bore is. Can it be scrubbed out or lapped?

I am always attracted to a potential bargain buy myself. You say the Hawken looks good other than the barrel, so in this case I would say:
1. The barrel may be salvageable to the point that it would shoot well enough for a hunting gun.
2. You might be able to pick up a cheap replacement barrel on ebay or some such place later on.
3. The lock alone if in good condition could be worth $100. The other parts, such as the rest of the furniture, sights, triggers, etc. add to the value.

In short, for around $100 it's hard to see how you could go wrong.

IF the rest of the rifle is really good...then it's a very good deal anywhere between $100.00 and $150.00. At $100.00 it's a STEAL given the prices folks are getting for just the PARTS you could take off and re-sell.
You might be surprised how well even a "rough" barrel will shoot. Depending of course on just how rough it actually is. I've turned down several similar rifles over the years simply because I don't need any new "projects", not that they weren't potentially good deals at that level.

I agree w Black Jack and Don it's well worth $100-150 with no barrel. If it's a .45 you could send it to Hoyt for a .50 bore and rifling job at $125 and still be in it for cheap.

Thanks for the information, Gentlemen. If I decide to go for it I would have the 50 caliber barrel rebored to 54 as I've always wanted on of those.

I'll keep it in consideration.

Some years back I bought a TC Hawken, 50 caliber with a good bore for $100 out the door from a local pawnshop. Only TC I've owned that had the new style barrel, QLA I think is what they called it. Rifle looked great but I hated that barrel. I sold that one. It's the only TC that I haven't liked. Greg.

The stock and lock are worth 100 bucks and if the barrel is toast buy a GM barrel and put the original underlug, rib/thimbles and sights on it or if you can; find a drop-in for it.

While your at it sand, stain and seal the stock and you will have a nice rifle pretty cheap. 165 is too much but 100 I would go for it.

While I am only interested in flint rifles and 15/16" channels I would pick up any TC's with a good lock, triggers and stock for 100 bucks even if the barrel is toast. Barrel blanks go for 150 bucks so a little drilling and tapping and cutting a dovetail or two can be done cheap and not hard. Good experience working on them too.

I have a Renegade and a Hawkin, 50 calibers. Both I have stripped and refinished with boiled linseed oil. Nice rifles. Thought about a 54 for a long time. Saw that one whilest perusing the long guns on the wall and could see the possibilities. Would be a good project rifle to rebored. May need to meander back there in a few days to see how motivated they are to sell.

Well; I look at it this way. In a few years getting a TC for 100 bucks isn't going to happen. Barrels are re-freshened cheaper than buying a new one. Stocks on E-bay go for more than that.

The model I like is the TC PA Hunter's and I pick them up whenever I find one at a good price. I see used flinters in that model go for 600 bucks here in PA. Looking for another as we speak but I am not going to pay over a couple hundred no matter how nice it is.

I am chomping at the bits to get out and do a little flinter woodchuck hunting. I have been doing a good bit of long range 150-200 yard ball shooting lately. Not easy but doable.

That would be a steal considering that in my neck of the woods a TC Hawken/Renegade in good condition goes for 4 - $500. If the bore is toast it can be re bored, or relined for about $125 and you'll have a nice rifle for half the price.

FWIW, I got my TC Hawken with a great condition barrel for $200 on armslist last year.
He had it at $300 for 2 months as I watched him lower to $250, then called and offered $200.
