Are veg tanned hides good for making leggins, mocs and such. I've been trying to get some hides to try and brain tan but no luck. I'm starting to think I may have to buy some leather. I know I don't want commercial tanned leather. I've heard of brain tan, veg tan and bark tanned leather. All of which is historially correct I believe. The brain and bark stuff is pricey. I haven't really found any veg tanned hides so if anyone has any suggestions on suppliers or thoughts on the use of veg tanned I would appreciate any thoughts on the subject. Lookin to make some mocs and maybe som leggins. Oh yeah, is veg tanned as hot as commecially tannedleather or is it soft and cooler like brain tanned. Thanks again for any info. Andy

Well I don't know squat about veg. tanning, and I've only brain tanned two deer hides, so I'm kind of, sort of, getting an inkling of a clue about that.

Anyway, check out this site, they've got a lot of good articles and ideas, and a forum where you can get some more of your questions answered.

FF call around to yer local taxidermy shops, they usually have plenty of raw deer hides at decent prices or call a place that processes(butchers) deer during hunting season. they may sell ya a couple hides that the deer hunters didn't want
