Hello all,

some days ago I got my new .36 flintlock rifle. The vent liner which is installed has a 1/16 hole outside. Inside the touch hole liner the diameter is 0.157.

Do you think that hole (the 1/16) is to big ?

In my .54 flintlocks I use also 1/16 holes (in the vent liner) with good results, but I worry about the smaller .36 caliber that accuracy would suffer (gas loss etc.).

Thank for your suggestions!

Wolke,
I like vents slightly larger. There are a number of "numbered" bits that seem to increase vent speed. In an ajoining topic - "Priming powder location in the pan" I used a Chambers liner drilled out to .070 inch. I have timed vent to .078, but that may be overkill. In the powder location test I timed 30 trials each with "powder banked away" and "powder as close to the vent as possible without filling it". Powder close to the vent won. The results I speculate would be the same if the vent was smaller, but both sets of trials may have been slightlt slower.

Regards,
Pletch

Heck no, fire that mother up & go ! I never go smaller than a 1/16" vent hole on any rifle. And personally anything I own 45 cal or larger I go with a 5/64".

I second what Birddog6 said. I have two finters that are almost as fast as a percussion. One is a .32 with a 1/16" touch hole and the other is a .50 with a 5/64" touch hole. Both rifles are extreamly accurate shooters. Better than the operator.
